Who is it for?

Reconnect with your love for the bike and exploration. Raids are designed for independent riders with a thirst for going off the beaten track, and exploring lesser-known but nonetheless spectacular destinations and roads. You’ll still have access to a Rapha guide, full mechanical and logistical support, but the emphasis is on self-sufficiency, creating an adventure through wild and unspoilt landscapes. Each night we’ll greet you with hearty food and charming, rustic accommodation, to prepare you for another day’s exploring. It is cycling taken back to the essentials: a bike, a fantastic route to ride, and the self-imposed challenges that brings.

How Hard is it?

Because of the emphasis on challenging terrain and self-sufficiency, Raids suit the more confident, athletic rider, or groups of friends who may already have done a multi-day trip and want to challenge themselves further.

Day 1

San Francisco — Monterey

Today we begin our route south, and if we're lucky we will have a tailwind which will blow us all the way into Monterey. Starting in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge and cycling along the famous, scenic Highway One through Half Moon Bay, we will toss in a few secret side roads that will surely inspire your riding, before arriving at Monterey.

Day 2

Monterey — Cambria

Today we plunge south, into the Santa Lucia Mountains and along the remarkable Big Sur coast. No turns, no intersections, no stop lights for 100 miles! Let this stretch of road inspire you. We never tire of cycling with the sea on our right for the whole day, and we are sure you won’t either.“Big Sur is the California that men dreamed of years ago, this is the Pacific that Balboa looked at from the Peak of Darien, this is the face of the earth as the Creator intended it to look.”

Day 3

Cambria — Solvang-Los Olivos

On day three we head away from the ocean for some stunning scenic inland riding. We climb demanding creek and canyon roads, hit a bit of dirt and pass the famous Morro Rock – but there’s also lush strawberry fields, a fine coffee stop and an overnight rest in the heart of the wine country.

Day 4

Solvang-Los Olivos — Santa Barbara

Many pro teams come to Solvang to train each spring, and the narrow, almost-Alpine Figueroa Mountain Road, which rises more than 3,000 feet, is a big draw. Today’s golden hills and 19th-century stagecoach roads present countless photo opportunities, and the view of Santa Barbara and the ocean from East Camino Cielo is a fine reward for all your sweat and hard work at the end of an amazing trip.

Customer Testimonials

Hotels were all fantastic, great variety of places, all of which were comfortable.

— Raid Utah, 2016

Can I make a group booking?

Yes – family members, colleagues or friends usually find that embarking on a group adventure makes it even more fun and rewarding. However, trip places are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Raids provide a true opportunity to ride together and build a camaraderie richly rewarded.

Am I strong enough for the trip?

All our trips are physically demanding, but some are harder than others. Raids are among the toughest with roads and terrain off the beaten track and Retreats are among the most relaxing. Our guides and mechanics will support every rider to go beyond their usual level of riding. Each individual trip is rated for difficulty.
