Best known for having the most successful lead out ever seen in US crits, L39ION of Los Angeles enjoyed unprecedented success in their first season racing at Continental level. But this is a team that’s about far more than being good on the bike. At every race they enter, Legion’s tent is the place to be; their insightful race reports filmed from within the bunch have garnered a following of thousands online, and the team works hard to provide a pathway into the sport for young athletes from all backgrounds.
Founded in 2019 by Justin and Cory Williams, both veterans of the US crit scene, it only took five months for the team to secure their first state and national championships. Two years in, even after months of contending with a curtailed calendar due to the pandemic, Legion already had a Continental squad and a co-ed domestic elite team that was ready to dominate in 2021.
The team’s season highlight came at the Tulsa Tough where they took a clean sweep, with Cory Williams and Skylar Schneider both securing wins on GC. Not long after Tulsa, Kendall Ryan raced to victory at the US National Championships in Knoxville, claiming the women's criterium title. And Legion continued their winning streak at criteriums in Salt Lake, Littleton and Athens, to name but a few.
Even as the titles and championships continue to pile up, this is a team with a purpose beyond the podium. They’ve committed to raising vital funds to develop the sport in the US, teaming up with CYCLE Kids to get more young people on bikes in Los Angeles County. And with an ambitious fundraising target of $200,000, the Williams brothers aim to provide bikes and support cycling programs across eight schools in their community.
In 2022, the team will continue to promote diversity in cycling and work towards creating a brighter future for the sport that’s accessible to all. And with more athletes joining the roster, including US Olympian Gavin Hoover, the sky’s the limit for Legion as they embark on another season of racing.
