Merino Cycling Apparel
Engineered for natural thermoregulation and lasting protection, our performance merino keeps you comfortable through every season.
What is merino wool and why is it used in cycling kit?
Merino wool comes from Merino sheep and is much finer and softer than regular wool. In men's cycling jerseys, it is prized because it doesn't itch and offers "active" temperature regulation. Unlike synthetic fabrics that can feel clammy, merino absorbs moisture vapour and releases it into the atmosphere, keeping you dry. It is also naturally antibacterial, meaning your technical cycling tops stay odour-free even after a long day in the saddle. At Rapha, we blend it with recycled polyester to create Rapha Performance Merino (RPM) for added durability and a faster drying time.
Is a merino cycling jersey better than a synthetic one?
It depends on your ride. For pure racing and aerodynamics, our Pro Team synthetic kits are best. however, for almost every other type of riding — from club runs to multi-day adventures — a merino-blend jersey is often superior. It excels in a massive temperature range (typically 10°C to 25°C) and feels much more luxurious against the skin. Because it doesn't hold onto smells, it is the perfect men’s cycling gear for commute-and-office days or bike-packing trips where you might wear the same kit two days in a row.
Does merino wool make you too hot in the summer?
Actually, the opposite is true. Because merino is so breathable, it helps move heat away from your body. In the same way a sheep stays cool in the sun, a lightweight merino base layer or jersey creates a microclimate next to your skin. It wicks sweat away before it turns into liquid, preventing that soaked feeling. Many riders find that a short sleeve merino jersey is their most versatile piece of kit, providing comfort in the midday sun and just enough insulation if the clouds roll in.
Can Rapha repair my merino jersey if it gets a hole?
Yes, we are committed to keeping your kit on the road. Merino is a natural fibre and, while our RPM technical fabric is very strong, it can occasionally suffer from snags or moth holes if not stored correctly. If your merino cycling apparel is damaged, you can use the Rapha Free Repair Service. Our expert repair team will use specialist techniques to mend it. This service is free of charge for most damages, ensuring your premium cycling kit remains a sustainable, long-term part of your wardrobe.
Can I wear Rapha merino jerseys for high-intensity training?
While our Pro Team range is designed for elite racing, our merino cycling kit is ideal for high-tempo training and endurance rides. The natural stretch of the wool allows for a comfortable, Regular Fit that moves with your body. For intense efforts, the Classic Jersey and Brevet collection provide excellent sweat management, ensuring you don’t feel damp or chilled during descents.
