In the hierarchy of technical cycling apparel, the base layer is often the most overlooked or misunderstood. As a piece of kit in constant contact with your skin, it is the foundational layer that can enhance your comfort. Choosing the right option is not merely about warmth; it is about maintaining a stable microclimate, regulating your core body temperature by wicking moisture away from the skin. The primary function of a base layer is to move sweat away from the body. If moisture remains on the skin, you risk overheating on climbs and chilling on descents. By creating a thin layer of air against the body, a well-chosen base layer provides an insulating buffer that keeps you dry and comfortable. Whether it is a high-summer race or a sub-zero winter epic, when your base layer is working properly, you won’t even know it is there.

Moderate
Our classic Merino Base Layer has been in the ranks since 2005 and has been a universal favourite thanks to its adaptability to almost every condition. Now with an upgraded fabric for improved durability, fit and shape retention, the 17.5 micron merino yarn feels beautiful on the skin. Knitted to aid airflow and wicking, the merino fibres are wrapped with a high-tenacity nylon to improve abrasion resistance.
Performance Fabrics
Both the merino and synthetic yarns used in our base layer fabrics have been updated to offer improved durability, shape retention and comfort.
COLD & BELOW 0ºC
Effectively managing moisture during activities is crucial for optimal performance and safety.
Made using Polartec® thermal fabrics, our cold weather base layers offer superior thermoregulating and sweat wicking properties for colder days. Flatlock seams offer next-to-skin comfort, and an integrated neck warmer (with an opening at the back for a ponytail on the women’s version) offers extra coverage when the cold bites.
Closer Comfort
Sitting close to the skin for optimum comfort, base layers offer a ‘barely there’ feel that makes all the difference, so you can build up the layers without the bulk.
HOT WEATHER
On the hottest days you might want to wear less, but a lightweight and breathable layer will help keep you cool and dry in the heat. Designed to be worn under a jersey on hot days, our lightweight base layers offer exceptional levels of breathability and moisture transfer.
