Fine merino for all-day cycling comfort

Any experienced cyclist knows the value of a good base layer. It will keep you cool on scorching hot cols in July and warm on freezing descents in January. A good base layer helps regulate body temperature whatever the weather, transfering moisture from the skin and proving a vital aid to performance.

Rapha base layers are made from 100% merino wool and are naturally anti-bacterial and odour resistant. Wicking moisture vapour extremely quickly, they are soft on the skin and itch free.

Rapha's merino base layers come in three styles; sleeveless, short and long sleeve. All the seams have flatlock stitching so they won't chafe and are positioned behind the shoulders to avoid bag or bib straps rubbing while cycling. The base layers are close fitting and cut long at the back for a better fit on the bike.

"Base layers are incredibly important in winter to help regulate the body's temperature, but they also keep the body dry without it getting too hot. Rapha's base layer does this superbly, something that the mention of wool might normally have you doubting."
- Cycling Weekly

"There's a soft pliability to Rapha's wool that makes it a joy to wear as a layer against the skin. The wicking is outstanding. It's the best base layer I've ever worn [and] was equally pleasurable at both ends of the temperature spectrum."
- Competitive Cyclist

"Despite having so much cool Rapha clothing to choose from, my absolute favourite is the merino wool undervest. I practically live in those things. Whether it's training, sleeping or just chilling out around the house."
- Kristian House, 2009 British National Road Race Champion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect base layer This has become my go-to base layer for the variable late summer and early fall weather here in the SF Bay Area. The fit is right and the material quality is top notch. I bought a second one already and am thinking about a long sleeve one for when the weather cools down...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spot On. Been wearing this and the sleeveless version almost every ride for a month and it's great. It's become the piece of kit that I don't know how I made it through last fall and winter without. I find it fits a bit large - more like standard clothing vs cycling sizing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant Baselayer I bought the Merino Base layer as the autumn was approaching and the temperatures start to fall on the early morning ride. I was amazed at the warmth offered by the baselayer - it's an amazing piece of technical cycle clothing and yet very light. I wear this now on all my early morning rides and I hope to pick up another one (perhaps for Christmas). Well worth the spend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic underlayer this is my first underlayer and it's fantastic. used for the first time this weekend in 5 degree celsius weather and definitely helped keep me nice and warm. I'm 5'7" and very slim build 35' chest and ordered XS and was a perfect fit. Would highly recommend

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely I bought this item a month ago to see me through rides in the autumn and into the winter, and have worn it on 5-6 rides since. I have been hugely impressed with the product, so much so that I have ordered the long-sleeve version. A wool base layer feels counter-intuitive, but I have found it has kept me warm at the start of a ride, and dry during the rides - none of the chilliness you get with other base layers when you stop. This may sound an odd thing to say, but I like the smell of the item - the item is badged as "odour-resistant" and is living up to that so far. It also looks really nice. Thoroughly recommended.

How do you ensure the merino is nz?   I like your stuff and you have great reputation but won't buy merino if it is not zque certified as nz . Apparently lots of Far East production gets merino from anywhere and mixes it up and It is hard to police

I am 42 inch chest - should I go for a large or a medium?

Asked by: chris1969
This would depend on your individual requirements. The Medium would be a tighter fit, but i you would prefer a slightly relaxed fit you could go for the Large. We do have a 90 day returns policy if the garment does not meet with your specifications.

Hello, I would like to find out what the merino weight difference is between the regular short sleeve and the V neck as both are described as having 150gr fabric weight. Also, could you please tell me the micron thickness of the merino used.  Thank you

Asked by: Noamarkou
Hi, the merino weight for each will depend on the size but both use 17.5 micron merino.

Do I need to buy my usual size or should I buy one size down? A lot of reviews seem to suggest it runs large for size

Asked by: Skywalker
Hi, due to the stretchy nature of the merino it can be recommend to size down for the Merino Base Layer.
