Racing in the era of legends

1909 was a distinctive time for bike racing. Many riders were as interested in stopping their opponents as they were in making it over the finish line. Riders like Giovanni Gerbi (known as Il Diavolo Rosso, the ‘Red Devil’) would go to any lengths to win. But for every villain there is, invariably, a hero. And Gerbi’s came in the form of Giovanni Cuniolo – known as Manina, or ‘little hand’, because of his fondness for physicality in the sprints.

Manina’s and Gerbi’s rivalry was legendary – brutal and beautiful in equal measure. Their fiercest battle was set for the 1909 Giro di Lombardia, known then as the Criterium d’Autunno, or ‘race of the falling leaves’. Of the 363 starters, Gerbi was destined not to be among them, his schemes this time undone by a bout of flu. And so, despite puncturing at Cappelletta, it was Cuniolo who rode home first.

This classic-style jersey celebrates the 1909 Giro di Lombardia and Cuniolo’s famous victory. Created to mirror Rapha’s Gerbi-inspired Lombardia Jersey of 2012, the jersey is finished in vivid evergreen colours, combining a Breton-style collar, ribbed cuffs and Sportwool™ fabric. Embroidered details recall the race route, along with Manina insignias, and a motif based on the Passo del Ghisallo and Lake Como, integral features of this historic race. This highly collectable jersey is as suited to training rides as it is casual wear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique Kit I first saw this jersey a few years ago on the Rapha site and instantly liked the unique design with the strange looking button system on the shoulder. Even with its calm color tones, this was a garment that really stood out! It sold out unfortunately and so I was pleasantly surprised to see it available again recently. I quickly made the purchase and am pleased to confirm that it is as lovely as the pictures indicate. The fabric is comfortable and the attention to detail in the workmanship is quite impressive. A beautiful jersey and one that I am really glad I was able to get my hands on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No zip but looks mega Worn it as a top layer with a long sleeve base between 3-7 degrees and it’s been a treat. Better for shorter rides due to it being difficult to regulate heat due to the neck. But tbh it’s more of a fashion piece than performance kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfetto Functional kit with enough style to wear off bike.... or is that stylish clothing that's functional as bike kit.... ? not sure but it strikes the perfect balance (this piece is more about style, but that's totally in keeping with the Italian heritage!) Bravo! This has quickly become my favourite fall jersey to take in the changing colours along the Niagara Escarpment while riding my classic steel Pegoretti and then lingering at the cafe stop over an espresso (or two)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lombardia Jersey It's actually a sweater (in my opinion) but no matter - I loves the material and functionality, plus the style is so unusual I have people stop me to ask what it is. I wish there were more of these non-racing items in the Rapha line - it functions great as a base or insulation layer and also works great as a casual wear shirt!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly right After 40 years in the saddle, I've worn through plenty of lesser garments. This piece, however, is the finest long-sleeve jersey I've owned. It is rich in color and in embroidered detail. The fit feels bespoke (5'8"/155lbs, size M). The Breton button collar gives it a sweater-like finish. Venting hasn't been an issue because the fabric breathes so well. On colder days (into the 30s F), I've combined it with a Pro Team Rain Gilet, Winter Collar, Classic Winter Tights and overshoes for hours of comfort. It's an exceptional jersey, and I couldn't be happier with its form and function. Thanks for creating it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very comfortable, looks great I find this jersey to be very comfortable and perfect for weather in the low-to-mid 50s. In the low 60s I was starting to feel a little warm. I ordered an XL and the fit is in line with my expectations based on other products I've gotten from Rapha. The one thing about this jersey though is the buttons. The shoulder placement is a little odd and inconvenient, and there are also buttons on the back pockets which you'll probably want to unbutton prior to a ride, and maybe even ultimately remove completely. However I don't find that to be a show-stopper and it doesn't affect the comfort quality of this jersey.
