Rapha and Ben Ingham present Journey, a decade of photographic discovery

A decade of Ben Ingham photography and adventure

Ben Ingham has worked closely with Rapha since the company’s launch, in 2004. Having cut his teeth in New York in the 1990s, assisting the likes of Bruce Weber and Richard Avedon, Manchester-born Ingham went on to develop his own, distinctive style of cycling photography. Inspiring and compelling in equal measure, his work captures both the grit and grandeur of the sport.

Featuring 260 duotone prints, this new book offers a photographic record of the journey taken by Ben Ingham and Rapha over more than a decade. A document of the people, landscapes and roads that make road cycling the world’s most beautiful sport, these black-and-white and colour images capture locations as diverse as the cols of France and streets of Hong Kong. The images are accompanied by nine short written pieces from other Rapha collaborators.

It has been edited and re-edited more times than I can remember. Inside are some pictures you’ll know but many only I have seen before now. There’s also an introduction by Herbie Sykes, about love and realisation, which is apposite because the pictures are about love and recognition, the recognition that, given a little time and a little effort, a bicycle can take you on a journey of discovery and adventure.

– Ben Ingham

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb photo-book The book is a beautiful overview of Ben Ingham's work with Rapha--- you've seen the films he's directed now you can see the images he's taken and collected in an edition worth flipping through repeatedly! The accompanying written pieces help frame the passion involved in the images and give some weight to the overall book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A poem for the road Riders, funnily enough, are almost absent from this book. It's more a collection of moods and moments, strung together by a thread. It's a documentary style, reflective and full of the character of film. Although there are many, many pictures of roads and mountains it's not a catalogue like the 'Great Roads of the XXX Alps' books. Rather, it's a poem. You know how a poem's power comes out of the singular choice of words, the omission of words, the juxtaposition of words just ... at ... the ... right ... moment? This book is like that, but with pictures instead of words. Some powerful, some absent, all working together. Deliberate, but not effortful. A journey. The book is beautifully printed in duo-tone, so that the range and density of the images are fully expressed. It's well bound, and just the right size and weight. The paper is good and the pictures sit comfortably on the page. The design is good. Every so often there are fold outs, which serve as punctuations throughout the book. A horse. Late afternoon light on the side of the road. Things that punctuate a ride or road trip. The tip-ins carry stories that are short. None of these are laboured or indulgent in the way they're written. Each one leaves you wishing there was more, but that's the joy of it. Much better than to wish the author would wrap it up. The pacing of the whole things is excellent. A final smile for me came at the end, to discover that much of pictures were made with the Leica M. I knew it! It's one of my favourite photography books now, regardless of subject. Bravo Ben!
