What is a gusseted crotch and why do I need one?

Traditional trousers have a point where four seams meet directly underneath you. When you sit on a bike saddle, this creates a thick bump of fabric that can cause significant discomfort and chafing. A gusseted crotch replaces that intersection with a flat, diamond-shaped panel of fabric. This removes the pressure point and significantly reduces the friction that usually leads to trousers ripping in the seat after a few months of commuting.

Why is mechanical stretch important for city riding gear?

Even if you aren't racing, your legs and hips move through a wide range of motion while pedalling. If your trousers don't have stretch, they will pull tight against your thighs and knees, making every pedal stroke harder. Mechanical stretch refers to fabrics that are woven in a way that allows them to expand and snap back into shape without needing high amounts of elastic. This gives you the freedom of movement of a tracksuit but the crisp, smart appearance of formal workwear.

What is Rapha Performance Merino and why is it used for city riding?

Merino wool is the ultimate fabric for the urban cyclist. Our Merino Windblock Sweatshirts and polos use a blend that is naturally odour-resistant, meaning you can ride to work and stay fresh all day. Merino is a reactive fibre that keeps you warm on cold morning starts but breathes exceptionally well as you warm up. This natural temperature regulation eliminates the clammy feeling of synthetic office wear, making it the most comfortable foundation for life in a busy city.

Do the Rapha City trousers include a reinforced seat?

Durability in the saddle zone is a priority. Several of our city-specific trousers and jeans are constructed with reinforced seams and abrasion-resistant fabrics to handle the constant friction of the saddle. Some styles also feature a gusseted crotch — a panel that replaces the traditional four-way seam — to remove pressure points and prevent the fabric from thinning over time. This ensures your trousers last through years of daily commuting, protected by our commitment to long-term durability and our free repair service (subject to certain conditions).

Can I wear a backpack with the City collection without damaging the fabric?

Yes, we design our city gear with the commuter’s luggage in mind. Our shirts and technical tees often feature offset shoulder seams to prevent the straps of a backpack from rubbing or causing irritation. We also select hard-wearing fabrics that are resistant to pilling and surface abrasion, ensuring your jacket or overshirt maintains its premium look even after months of daily use with a messenger bag or rucksack.
