At 4180 kilometres, the 1962 Giro was extremely long. It was also murderously hard, so the climbing specialist Charly Gaul was installed as the favourite. 22-year-old Franco Balmamion was given little chance but emerged three weeks later to take the first of two Giro titles. Made with merino wool and designed for all-round road riding, this luxurious jersey celebrates that win with embroidered and chain stitched details. The pink collar and cuffs honour the Giro with a ribbed construction for comfort, while the quarter zip allows for extra ventilation. Three button-up rear pockets are adorned with Franco’s finishing time, above which the ‘62 percorso is chain stitched. Under the collar ‘Bianco e Nero’ lettering is a nod to Balmamion’s Torinese team, while his nickname ‘The Eagle of Canavese’ is emblazoned proudly below. And as a final flourish, his initials are stitched onto the chest, a final reminder of a once forgotten Giro champion.
