Yes, You!

Adventure cyclist Lael Wilcox and co-founder Janie Hayes spearhead Yes, You! A bikepacking challenge for all women: femme, non-binary, transwomen, Black, Indigenous and all women of colour.

Between 1st-6th August 2021, one hundred women will be selected to participate in a self-supported trip through Colorado’s most breathtaking landscape. Women of all ages and backgrounds - from experienced riders to newcomers - will be tasked with completing the challenging route in a week or less, riding at their own pace in a safe space, engaging with their fellow riders along the way.

Tackling untamed terrain with little more than what can be strapped to the frame of a bike is undoubtedly a life-affirming experience. Sleeping out under the stars, forming lasting bonds with your fellow cyclists and making lifelong memories, bikepacking is the perfect way to awaken your adventurous spirit.

No one knows this better than Tour Divide women’s record holder Lael Wilcox who never misses an opportunity to ride astonishing distances through North America’s most unforgiving terrain. But all too often, women miss out on the experience of taking to the trail because cycling fails to create an environment where they are welcome to participate. Lael is dedicated to addressing this disparity with her Yes, You! Initiative, aiming to create a space that welcomes women to embark on a bikepacking adventure.

Lael, whose long-held commitment to getting more women riding, is channelling her efforts to focus primarily on women who are seldom welcome to participate in cycling. This includes women of all backgrounds, especially beginners. Femme, transgender, non-binary, Black, Indigenous and women of colour are invited to join a burgeoning community of riders who support and encourage each other to take on multi-day bikepacking trips, experiencing all the great outdoors has to offer.

Lael Wilcox and Janie Hayes have been busy collaborating with a Yes, You! leadership team, which includes Ally Mabry, Anna Mcleod, Brandi Blade, Christina Grande, Emet Ezell, Hannah Bingham, James Keys, Josie Fouts, Kellie Nelson and Rugile Kaladyte. For those who historically have not been represented, made to feel safe or supported in adventure sports, the Yes, You! team are here to prove that bikepacking can be for you. Yes, you!

“Leaving on my first cross-country trip in 2008, I thought I'd be riding for a couple of months before I moved on with my life. That was 12 years ago, and I'm more excited than I've ever been to keep riding and doing my best.”

- Lael Wilcox

THE RIDE

1-6th August 2021

Part of the Great Divide that helped forge Lael's reputation, the ride will follow the Colorado section of the race. The route, developed by Adventure Cycling Association and completed in 1997, skirts along the continental divide to feature some of Colorado's most exciting terrain.

Riders can choose between two routes. The first covers 392 miles with over 24,000 of climbing between Steamboat and Del Norte. The second is a shorter alternative, travelling the same trail before concluding early in Salida. Adventurous, but not too technical, the ride covers quiet, well-maintained roads with resupply stops and bike shops every 50 miles, making it ideal for beginners looking to push themselves.
