Summits with the Rapha Cycling Club are the highlight of our members’ riding calendars. Together, we descend on the world’s greatest cycling destinations to explore roads seldom ridden in stunning mountain settings.
RCC Summit Wuling 2–5 November 2018
Travel with the world's finest cycling club27 March 2018
Your bike may have been produced in Taiwan but how many people know about the island’s amazing riding? From the deep marble canyons, through humid, tropical rainforests and tea plantations to high peaks, the island’s mountainous spine is a cyclist’s playground. Topped off by smooth roads and warm, temperate weather, it’s a world away from the hustle of the city, with routes for cyclists of all ambitions, from tough mountain tests to lakeside loops. Better still, in a destination that’s still largely undiscovered, the roads are blissfully quiet.
There are a range of accommodation options on RCC Summit Wuling. The Hotel del Lago on the shores of Sun Moon Lake will host the Summit, an idyllic location with commanding views. Members also have the option to book without accomodation, allowing you to tailor make your trip to Taiwan or even extend it. Travel and stay with a group of friends or extend your trip off the back of the Taiwan K.O.M challenge the weekend before.
We ride together
The riding on the Summit showcases the most spectacular of Taiwan’s scenery, from high mountain lakes to bamboo forest. Designed by the Rapha Travel team to cater for all riding abilities, routes of varying difficulty are planned each day so the length and intensity of your ride is up to you. No club run is complete without a coffee stop so all routes include the best possible stops for drinks and lunch. Each ride is planned by a local expert and fully supported.
The Summit weekend is the highlight of the club calendar but riding is only part of the plan. There’s a full programme of off-bike events, from skills workshops to improve your technique to sneak peeks at upcoming releases with Rapha’s product team. The shores of Sun Moon Lake are dotted with hot springs, temples and secluded walking trails to be explored after your ride before you sit down for dinner in the evening.
Unique experience, unique kit
The black, grey and pink of our distinctive club kit is what unites the Rapha Cycling Club. But for the Summit weekend, we have something even more special. A twist on the classic RCC club kit inspired by the sights and colours of Taiwan’s mountains, Rapha has produced a bespoke Summit jersey and cap. Unique kit to match your one-off experience of riding in Taiwan.
Summit shuttles depart from Taoyaun International Airport at 9am, please book flights accordingly. Once you’ve dropped your bags, we’ve two ride to choose from, a tour of the tranquil Sun Moon Lake or a slightly longer ride to the Taomi eco village. Both routes are around 40km.
In the morning the longer route visits the traditional village of Bunun for a taste of aboriginal Taiwanese culture on a 100km loop. Covering roughly half that distance, the shorter ride takes in the peaceful countryside of Nantou. We all reconvene in the afternoon for the RCC Summit Championship - a light-hearted competition amongst clubmates for those who wish to take part.
The longer route today tackles the Wuling climb, a true test for your legs with a tonne of climbing on a 125km route. Alternatively, there’s a gentler route along the Shuili River valley that takes in forested lanes and spectacular views from two dams.
To top off a wonderful weekend, there’s once again two rides through the local countryside and forests, one slightly longer and the other ridden at a more social pace.
Shuttles return to Taipei, departing at about 12.30pm and should arrive at Taoyuan International Airport at about 3.30pm.
