Description

The foundation of successful cycling is uncomplicated, and that’s the ethos we bring to the Core Winter Jacket. The Core range is focussed on doing the basics brilliantly, so the Winter Jacket combines a weather-resistant 3-layer laminate front section with a breathable back to let excess heat escape. The result is a jacket that keeps wind and rain at bay, allowing you to concentrate on laying the foundations for the summer ahead. Available in four colours, it is finished with reflective details on the sleeves to provide additional visibility and a deep cut silicon gripper at the waist to keep everything in place. Three large pockets in the rear provide room for tools, spares and additional clothing, and a zippered valuables pocket keeps cash and keys safe.

Out performs its price tag.
This is a great jacket. It looks good, it's very comfortable, and it is, frankly, shockingly warm for a garment this light weight. If you get the "correct" size it's not going to leave you a ton of room for layering so plan accordingly. For me, I've been out in temperatures in the mid-30s F (1-3 C) with serious wind and my torso has stayed warm the entire time. In my case I was wearing one of the merino short-sleeve base layers, and a core long-sleeve jersey under the jacket. I bought some of the core cold weather stuff in the hopes of extending my cycling season, but I honestly didn't expect it to be this effective at these kinds of temperatures.

A great snug jacket
I purchased this jacket just after they were released, but hadn't worn it straight away, as the weather was still mild, but have enjoyed it's use over the last month or so since things have cooled down. A great close fitting jacket, that fits closely in all the areas I'd wish, with no wind flap (I am 6'2" and 80kg and Large is perfect). The sleeves are close fitting, on my slim arms, and the cuffs keep out any unwanted wind too. The collar fits closely around my neck to also eliminate any draughts, but not too much, like some jackets can which I really don't like. I can see this jacket being the perfect winter workhorse to take me through to spring.

Superlative, superlative....it's pink.
I could go on about how well in protects you from the rain and the cold. I could go on about the neat subtle Rapha styling and that as I'm quite a big guy the jacket fits comfortably. I could go on about the high quality zips and the rather spiffing elasticated gripper at the back of the jacket. I could go on about the tight fitting cuffs and the zip protector on the main zip. But no.....
It's high visibility pink. No...it's nothing-quite-like-it-in-terms-of-high-vis-colours-pink. It's the-motorist's-can't-use-the-excuse-they-didn't-see-you-riding-your-bike-pink.
Oh....and it washes well too. As per the instructions all mud stains have gone. Lovely.
Did I say it was pink?

Great look, moderate performance
Love the look, finish and fit of this jacket. I’m 1,77 m, 70 kg and I wear a medium. It’s comfortable and definitely windproof but it’s breathability is a joke. I’ve used it in temperatures between 5-9 degrees Celsius during moderate training. As long as I kept moving it was fine and kept me warm because of the windproofing, but underneath I was soaked in sweat, front to back. So I wouldn’t take it on full day rides, but for a few hours training it’s fine. The Rapha Core Winter Jacket is a well made and comfortable peace of garment but it proves once again that a combination of windproofing and breathability just can’t be done.

Draughty till you warm up
Ridden I in low single digit Celsius temperatures and works well with a base layer. Chilly to start but as you get into the ride you will soon warm up. Not completely wind proof so you will feel a draught particularly on descents and on the upper triceps but perfectly good at these temperatures. I was between an L and an XL with a 42” chest but went XL so I could layer beneath if required. Arms a little long but this is for winter base miles so is fine for me. I have red which is a more sober than standout shade. Very practical piece at great value.

Punches well above its weight
To be honest I wasn’t prepared for how good this jacket actually is when I ordered it. Being from the Core range I was expecting too much, but having used it a couple of times on autumn rides between 5 and 9’C I’m completely sold on it. First off, the fit is excellent, I always buy XS and this fits perfectly. No flappy excess material, nice snug almost race fit. Really appreciate the high collar, and wind-proof front panels, and great breathability. I do have another softshell by an Italian brand, which cost considerably more than this, but it’s right up there with it. Well done Rapha, another great go-to item for my autumn/ winter cycling wardrobe.

Not what I was expecting
This jacket is not thick enough to be considered a 'winter' jacket in my opinion, but then I live in Canada. I wasn't expecting it to be mid-winter warm but it's not even shoulder season warm. It has that weird fit that some cycling stuff has that it feels tight across the chest and shoulders when standing normally but fits fine in cycling position. Unfortunately this fit makes it difficult to layer when necessary and I ended up returning it. It's too bad because it sure looks sharp! If you are looking for stylish but not thick and you have a very slight frame then this is your baby.

Very happy with my first Rapha purchase
I've had the jacket a while now and have done quite a few rides in it. The fit is great - the shape of the shoulders and arms feels a little odd when first worn (relative to non-cyling shirts) but as soon as you get on the bike you realise what it was made for. The "hi vis pink" lives up to its name! During evening rides when it's starting to get dark it really stands out, and I've received several compliments while wearing it. The jacket also does a great job of keeping out the wind and cold. Pockets are big enough to hold everything I need, the small zipped one perfect for my keys, and I found them reachable on the bike even though I'm not the most flexible.

Given the measurements, I would recommend a size large. You may benefit however, from purchasing both sizes to see the difference.

How would you recommend layering this with other clothing items for (1) 0-5 Deg celcius and (2) 5-10 Deg celcius weather? For a casual cyclist, cycling around the city, plenty of start stopping
Conditions 1 , we are recommending wearing underneath the jacket only a long sleeves warm base layer such as our deep winter windblock base layer mixed with a pair of Winter gloves.
Conditions 2 , we are recommending wearing a short or long sleeves merino base layer depending on your exertion, mixed with a pair of long gloves such the pro team gloves.

Is this jacket for the coldest temperatures? (0C - 8C) Which jacket would keep me the warmest? The "Men's Core Winter Jacket" or the "Pro Team insulated Jacket?
The Core Winter jacket is a great choice for a Winter jacket with basics features, it will fill your expectations for your rides in cold conditions. The Pro Team insulated jacket will keep you warm on similar conditions ( 0 degree to 8 degrees ) only if you keep a high and consistent effort during your training. The Pro Team insulated jacket is much lighter than the Core Winter jacket.
