Hooded cycling base layer created for the very coldest days

The Deep Winter Base Layer has been created for training and racing in very cold conditions. It is made from two different weights of merino-rich fabric to provide the optimum balance between insulation and breathability. The leading edges – the hood, chest and arms – are made from a heavier jersey material (340gsm) for maximum protection from the wind, while the lower front body and back panel use a lighter version of the same material (240gsm). Both weights of fabric are high wicking, breathable, and extremely soft against the skin.

The sleeves have a two-piece construction to create a more comfortable shape when riding, and are also cut long and finished with thumb loops so they can be tucked securely into gloves. The hood is designed to fit under a helmet and features a ‘frogman’ face which can be worn over the mouth or under the chin depending on conditions. Flatlock seams throughout ensure the base layer won’t chafe and white reflective tabs on the hood and chest provide visibility in low-light conditions.

The hood is a nice touch that eliminates the need for an additional balaclava or scarf.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit, delightful feel, and warm as he** This is a great piece of kit. So impressed with the weight of the knit, which is not heavy, per se, but feels substantive and great against the skin. In practice, I wore this piece under a Rapha winter hardshell and rode comfortably in 19F weather. Excellent piece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Baselayer for when it's really cold I wear this baselayer when its around freezing or lower. The integrated hood and ability to cover my face or pull it down around my chin is great. I usually pair this with a normal jersey and my brevet jacket. This works for me from mid 30s F if its windy down and down to around 10F if I add a midweight jersey. I find over the mid 30s this baselayer is too warm and I go with a normal winter baselayer. This is the best baselayer for very cold rides and is great for spending a couple hours in freezing temps. I normally wear a Large in Rapha Brevet and Pro team tops but ordered this in medium and fits great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely the best Have been riding this so far this winter in 36 and above degrees. The feeling is nothing short of luxurious. When its in the fortys the hood folds down into a scarf and colder weather is great added head warmth and face shield. Wont ride without it in weather from 45 Fahrenheit down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved my winter riding I use this base layer under pro team jacket and depending on weather under insulated jacket between temperatures ranging from -3 to 2 degrees and it has been working ABSOLUTELY GREAT. The face coverage is vital for me and thanks to its high breathability I can keep it on for hours. A must for winter riding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Low Tempo Cozy Winter Perfection Performance: Great Winter Low Tempo Long Hours Base Ride Friend. Very Cozy Soft Merino. Fabric is fantastic. I use this in Low Temps when I'm only in Zone 1-2... max 3 and no Intervals... meaning I'm not sweating it out... If I'm on a fast paced Interval, Low Temp (around Freezing) ride I select either the New Winder Base Layer.. or the Stand By Pro Team Base Layer. Hood a nice alternative to a heavy hat... Fit: I'm 155 lbs, 5'11'' Tall, 41" Chest, 30" Waist, and the Medium fits splendidly.

Hi, I wear a xxl in the core winter jacket and have never tried any of your base layers; would you recommend a L in this or a M?

Asked by: Anonimo
It does depend upon your Chest size, but would suggest the Large Base Layer rather than the Medium if you normally wear an XXL as we recommend downsizing by one size for Base Layers

Hello, is the material in the hood and neck area thicker, thinner, or same compared to the Deep Winter Collar?

Asked by: vincenz
Hi, the material is the same thickness in both these products. Both have a high weight of merino for very cold conditions.

Hi! Should I buy the same size I use for other base layers? I noticed the size range ends at large? Thanks

Asked by: Wintery
Hi, we would recommend you choose the same size as you would normally wear in a merino base layer. The Merino Base Layers in general come up quite large so you may wish to size down one size.

Can you pull the hood down if things warm up a bit? Is the material stretchy enough to get your whole head out through the face hole if necessary?

Asked by: OrthoMatt
The 'hood' can be pulled down over the head.
