Lightweight, packable and water-resistant insulation

Long-distance riders often encounter a wide range of conditions, so a lightweight layer that is both warm and packable is essential. The Insulated Brevet Gilet provides exceptional warmth, while highly breathable Polartec Alpha insulation ensures you won’t overheat during harder efforts.

The gilet features reflective detailing for visibility, and a water-shedding DWR (durable water repellent) coating for added protection in rain showers. Thanks to the hydrophobic properties of the Polartec Alpha insulation, the gilet wont saturate in the same way that natural down insulation will, and is quick drying. Mesh side panels stretch to fit over full pockets and a zip placket keeps out the wind, and when not in use, the gilet rolls into an elasticated loop at the neck to stay tightly stored. Please note that the two-way zip included on this product at launch has been replaced by a standard zip.

Karen Whittier, product manager for insulation at Polartec, explains the science behind Polartec Alpha:

Polartec Alpha was engineered as an active insulation to regulate core body temperatures during both dynamic and static activities. This ‘adaptive’ breathability helps eliminate the need for shedding or adding layers while on the move, making it ideal for cycling.

By keeping moisture vapour moving freely through the fabric, it increases overall air exchange and drastically speeds up dry times, providing thermal regulated comfort. Polartec Alpha is also highly compressible, made with a stable core… that prevents ‘fibre migration’ to keep a uniform consistency, even after heavy wear and repeated laundering.

  • Quick drying and hydrophobic Polartec Alpha insulation
  • Self-storing into band at neck
  • DWR (durable water repellent) coating
  • Wind resistant fabric
  • Dropped rear hem for added protection
  • Reflective detailing throughout
  • Stretch side panels to accommodate full jersey pockets

  • 100% Nylon

  • Gentle machine wash at 30°C
  • Wash with like colours
  • Do not tumble dry

Body sizing

Chest: measure underneath the armpits with the tape measure straight around.
Back Length: measure from the bottom of where your collar sits/base of the neck to the bottom of your spine.
Arm length: measure from where the seam would start at shoulder to bottom of the wrist.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this incredibly versatile vest After a friend picked this up and was raving about it I took the plunge as well and I'm so glad I did. This easily one of my favourite pieces of kit. Generally speaking I run hot, so I envisioned this as a late fall-winter layer only but it is both warm and very very breathable. I'll be using this in the spring for sure and evening into early summer evenings. A medium fits snug on me (5'10, 180lbs) but is wearable both under a hardshell or overtop of a thick jersey (like a Gabba). It packs down easily and can fit in a standard jersey pocket and is very light. I've also taken to wearing it a couple times underneath my overcoat on chilly mornings walking to the office. The vest looks great and is seriously one of the best pieces I own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Indispensable on chilly Teesside night rides Take it out with me on every night ride as it's so easy to pack up in a pocket, and will 9 times out of 10 find itself on me by the end of a dark chilly evening ride on the Teesside roads. I'm 6ft, 40" chest, 32" waist, 70kg, and am happy i went with the medium instead of the large (as the sizing chart would have suggested for my chest size).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New favourite item! A go-to for every ride. I run hot when cycling, so this gilet, coupled with a classic long sleeve jersey and merino underlayer, has become by go-to combo for cool/cold rides. Love the design, fit and reflective features and it is both surprisingly warm and breathable in equal measure. Only gripe (and it is a minor one) is that I cannot for the life of me roll it up like Rapha have done in the pictures. Nevertheless, it still fits in my back pocket no problem. Quality, as always, is second to none. Much prefer layering to wearing a jacket and sweating loads so I will probably be wearing this for the next 4 months!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant!!! Yeah, there might me a price tag attached. As a young person, I tend to think of the short term cost. You need to wake up and smell the roses. If you buy cheap products you entire life, you will end up spending more money. I bought the very Bold Hi Vis Pink. Mum loves it, for its visibility aspects. I can honestly say that so far out of my Rapha purchases this was the most worth it. Go to your local club house, try it on, then wear it. They are awesome and very warm. I 100% RECOMMEND this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of kit It is great piece of kit for those autumn/early winter rides. Ideal for the temps down to 8C. Keeps you comfortable, yet not too overheated. Size is true.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm and breathable. This does exactly what it says - keeps you warn and protects against wind, while also being breathable so you don't overheat. I've worn on a couple of cooler rides (during November) and found it perfect in those temperatures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My go-to winter layer A great winter layer for all but the coldest conditions. Block the wind, keeps my core toasty but never overheats. Looks cool too & also high vis in the pink striped option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very versatile One of the best pieces of Rapha kit and I have a few. With this one it's possible to extend temperature range of any kit, being in summer or winter. During summer its great to pack it for longer higher climbs when it still gets cold on descents - regular gilet is too cold for this and brevet jacket a bit too bulky (although also fine). In winter as from 5 dgr and up its perfectly ok to ride with decent base layer and long sleeve jersey (not necessarily thermal winter jersey) with this gilet and its warmer and nicer on descents then with pro team jacket (this one is slightly too warm and sweaty on the planes but really cold and not enough wind proof on descents, one needs gilet for that anyway). I also own brevet insulated jacket but this one gets more use. The zipper is fragile however, I broke it in a fast start at the traffic light, it seems a weak point of all rapha kit.

The medium in the pro range is perfect for me, I have small for the city range and borderline small-medium for the classic range. Which size do you recommend for this gilet?

Asked by: Txema
The Medium fit should be a good fit. This Garment has a more relaxed fitting then the Pro Team Range and is more in line wit the Classic Range.

Hi, I'm looking for a gilet to accompany a lightweight jersey when cycling early morning in spring when temps are about 10-15 degrees- would you suggest insulated or standard gilet?

Asked by: Nick101
As we all regulate temperature differently it is hard to advice on the temperature range for individuals and differing exertion levels will also affect its properties. For cooler temperatures we would certainly recommend the insulated Gilet as it does provide extra protection from the outside elements.

If worn in heavy rain, will the insulation still provide warmth?

Asked by: Bugs
Hi, this gilet is not intended for use as an outer layer in heavy rain. It is water-resistant and Polartec Alpha is one of the quickest drying insulation materials available.
