Longer cut cycling bib shorts

A recent invention, ‘three quarters’ were the brainchild of Edwig Van Hooydonk. The Belgian hardman had the idea after winning the Tour of Flanders in 1989. Riding in horrendous conditions, the conventional shorts he chose to wear on that occasion had aggravated a recurring knee problem. His solution was a pair of cycling shorts that stretched below the knee and offered an elegant alternative to the wrapped bandages routinely used at the time. The new look (in smart WordPerfect dark blue) was introduced in 1990 and gained further international exposure when Van Hooydonk returned to Flanders to win again in 1991.

Rapha’s ¾ Bib Shorts use a special, fleece-backed Thermoroubaix fabric to ensure maximum comfort. As with Rapha’s regular bib shorts, the ¾ bibs are made from a luxury mesh material with a large cutaway section in the back to prevent overheating. The shorts also use the same, top-of-the-range pad from specialists Cytech with slim padding and a chamois finish. The ¾ bib shorts have flatlock stitching throughout to prevent chafing and are finished with soft gripper around the legs. Stylish white panels on the lower legs improve visibility.

Reviews:

"The fit is absolutely spot-on and the supremely comfortable Roubaix fabric actually makes them ideal for spring and autumn, but also the worst winter days."
Cycling Plus / Bike Radar ****½

"They’re warm, stretchy and as comfortable as a soft blanket on a cold, quiet evening. Wind deflection is top notch. I’ve worn them down to freezing temperatures as well as up to 50-degrees and always felt thermo-comfy without being overwhelmed by too much warmth."

"Comfortable kit especially once worn in with a real quality air as expected of Rapha."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must used pair of Bib Shorts I own Bought these bibs as there are long spring and fall seasons in my area. These are perfect down to upper 30's and even wearable up to low 60's if you aren't riding super hard. Took a few rides to break in, as they were stiff to begin; however they are perfect now after some use! Super stylish with some oversocks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabric/Fit Perfection A triumph of apparel for narrow use-cases. Chilly but not freezing. Knees warm without layers or bunching up of knee warmers. The fit stays firmly in place and the chamois is so luxurious (not bulky). The material is between a normal chamois and Rapha's Winter Insulated bib material. It's just right. I'm still a sucker for the Rapha classic styling and this is a legacy piece that I hope stays the same and comes back ever fall. I'd love to see the classic bibs "Rapha" logo come back on the sides, however or receive similar updates that the pro-line has seen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Functional - snug, but good fit Used in 35-45 F conditions. Worked great. Pull ankles up to knees when putting on them pull down. Can feel pretty snug going on otherwise. I’m 5’9”, 150 and the medium is the right fit

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn’t ask for better Great padding and good fit. Keeps me warmer than some other full length offerings from other brands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not sure you need anything else Bought these as an alternative to deep winter leggings and now worn them predominantly. I don't really get cold shins so these are perfect with the weather protection where needed. Paired with good upper layers and warm socks, they have most of the colder rides covered in the UK I think.

How far below the knee should they go?

Asked by: Chappers70
Hi, as a 3/4 this should sit on mid shin length. Though of course this will be dependent on upper and lower leg size for each individual.
