Winter training in North West England with the Rapha Cycling Club

February in the forest

The Lake District is a well-known destination for road cyclists in Britain. Steep hills and quiet lanes abound, making for an ideal setting for a weekend of winter training. But just south of the Lakes, beyond Kendal and bordering the Yorkshire Dales, lies the Forest of Bowland. Lesser known - and quieter - but just as challenging, the forest was the preferred training ground of Sir Bradley Wiggins in the lead up to his win at the 2012 Tour

For a long weekend in early February, the Forest of Bowland attracted 35 members of the Rapha Cycling Club’s Manchester chapter to its rolling climbs and leaden skies.

Organised by members, the trip took place over three typically wintry days, and was documented by local photographer Matt Randall.
