Longer cut cycling bib shorts

A recent invention, ‘three quarters’ were the brainchild of Edwig Van Hooydonk. The Belgian hardman had the idea after winning the Tour of Flanders in 1989. Riding in horrendous conditions, the conventional shorts he chose to wear on that occasion had aggravated a recurring knee problem. His solution was a pair of cycling shorts that stretched below the knee and offered an elegant alternative to the wrapped bandages routinely used at the time. The new look (in smart WordPerfect dark blue) was introduced in 1990 and gained further international exposure when Van Hooydonk returned to Flanders to win again in 1991.

Rapha’s ¾ Bib Shorts use a special, fleece-backed Thermoroubaix fabric to ensure maximum comfort. As with Rapha’s regular bib shorts, the ¾ bibs are made from a luxury mesh material with a large cutaway section in the back to prevent overheating. The shorts also use the same, top-of-the-range pad from specialists Cytech with slim padding and a chamois finish. The ¾ bib shorts have flatlock stitching throughout to prevent chafing and are finished with soft gripper around the legs. Stylish white panels on the lower legs improve visibility.

"The fit is absolutely spot-on and the supremely comfortable Roubaix fabric actually makes them ideal for spring and autumn, but also the worst winter days."
Cycling Plus / Bike Radar ****½

"They’re warm, stretchy and as comfortable as a soft blanket on a cold, quiet evening. Wind deflection is top notch. I’ve worn them down to freezing temperatures as well as up to 50-degrees and always felt thermo-comfy without being overwhelmed by too much warmth."

"Comfortable kit especially once worn in with a real quality air as expected of Rapha."

Inside Leg: from the crotch to the base of the ankle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm and snug I like these so much that, after completely trashing my originals in an accident, I saved up to buy a second pair. They have the same comfy pad as the classic bib shorts. Compared to well worn classic shorts, they feel a bit more bulky and require a bit of wriggling and adjusting to get comfortable. Once on, however, they are toasty warm and, for me, pretty much replace full length tights for all but the coldest of winter days in South West England.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential Kit Bought a month or so ago thinking they would be useful for autumn and then again in the spring. After a couple of outings, I think these will see me through winter as well. Extremely comfortable fit (although a bit tight on the back of the knee first time out of the bag). Feeling good in the kit you pull on whilst it is not looking good outside helps get you out there. These bib shorts do just that!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These really are fantastic shorts I've always been a fan of 3/4 bibs over full lengths or shorts and knee warmers around this time of year. The bit of exposed skin down on the shins helps to regulate temperature and once they're on you can just forget about them. These Rapha 3/4 bibs are expensive, but they are also absolutely brilliant. Before i was using a pair of DHB 3/4 bibs which i'd had for a couple of years, and the difference between those and the Rapha ones really is like night and day. The pad in these Rapha shorts makes it feel like you're sitting on a cloud, while the fabric is both warm and comfortable, as well as being remarkably breathable. I've worn them in temperatures ranging from 4-14 degrees centigrade and they have worked flawlessly every time. In fact, as others have said, they are one of those bits of kit that actually make you look forward to riding in the cold and wet! My only minor gripe is the white patches on the fronts of the legs. I know they are there for visibility purposes, but given the nature of 3/4 bibs, you're often riding in wet and muddy road conditions, which means the white patches are completely covered in dirty grit and road spray within about 10 minutes. Fortunately it does seem to wash out fairly well but i can see those patches fading to grey after lots of use. Minor complaint though! Size wise, I am a 33 inch waist and 34 inch leg, and the large fits perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite Bib!! Fall/Winter/Spring - 3 of the 4 seasons. Once temps drop 55F, this thing comes in handy protecting you from the elements and at the same time providing support as you ride. For winter, I just use leg warmers or ski socks and it keeps the ride comfy. I love this bib shorts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fit. Works well I bought a size XL. I'm an unusual 5' 9", 41" chest & 35" waist. They are a little snug on the thighs and slippery on my Flite Saddle. But a great piece of kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great 3/4 bib shorts Excellent 3/4 bib shorts although they are a bit warmer than expected. I will use them for most commutes unless there is snow. I find them a bit higher at the front than other bibs which is good when its colder.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very versatile autumn kit Great kit for autumn weather and cold starts, have used from 10 to 17 degrees without cold knees or overheating. Braces fit my long torso without problems. Pad feels thick, but not uncomfortable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Quite frankly the best piece of cycling kit I own. I'm 6' tall with a 33" waist. A large fits perfectly.

Is it suitable for a place with summer all year round but I want to wear it for night rides?

Asked by: Min Hamdan
As we all regulate temperature differently it is hard to advice on the temperature range for individuals and differing exertion levels will also affect its properties.

Would these be compatible with Rapha leg warmers?

Asked by: theantichristy
Hi, these 3/4 Bib Shorts were not designed to be worn with Rapha Leg Warmers. The bibs are fleece lined and so this is not necessary. If the bottom of your legs were still cold, the next option would be a pair of bib tights.
