Lucho’s legacy in a jersey for the climbs

In 1987 Lucho Herrera became the first Colombian to win a Grand Tour when he took both the overall and the King of the Mountains competition at the Vuelta a España. His win marked the start of a legacy in national cycling, and since the 80s the ‘escarabajos’ (beetles – the collective nickname given to Colombian riders due to the riding style of 1950s rider Ramón Hoyos), have been a prominent force at the head of the European peloton.

The Rapha Colombia KOM Jersey takes its inspiration from Herrera’s win, combining authentic design touches with modern fabrics and functionality. Made of Rapha’s own RPM150 merino mix fabric, there is a repeated escarabajos print, with beetles also featuring on the silicon gripper tape, and a circular Colombian tricolour patch, as appeared on the Colombian trade team jerseys of the time. The Lagos de Covadonga patch on the left breast references the queen stage of the 1987 Vuelta, which Herrera won in emphatic style, securing the Rey de las Montañas title as well as taking the overall leader’s jersey.
