What is the difference between a cycling cap and a standard hat?

A traditional cycling cap, or casquette, is designed specifically for performance on the bike. It features a short brim to shield your eyes from sun and rain without obstructing your vision when riding in the drops. Made from breathable cotton or technical synthetics, these caps are low-profile enough to fit comfortably under a helmet. In contrast, our standard hats, such as cycling beanie hats, are designed for thermal insulation during deep winter rides or for casual comfort and style once you have finished your journey.

How should I wear a cycling cap with a helmet?

For the best fit and safety, a cycling cap should be worn underneath your helmet. Ensure the cap sits level on your head so that the helmet can provide full coverage. The brim can be worn flipped up for a classic look and maximum field of vision, or flipped down to provide a peak against glare and road spray. Because our caps are made from thin, high-quality fabrics, they provide a seamless layer that wicks moisture away from your brow without interfering with the secure fit of your helmet.

Are Rapha cycling caps one size fits all?

Most of our classic and technical cycling caps are designed as "one size fits most," featuring an elasticated rear fastener to accommodate a wide range of head shapes comfortably. This ensures a snug, aerodynamic fit that stays in place even in high winds. For our lifestyle headwear, such as bucket hats or certain winter hats, we often provide specific sizing to ensure a more tailored silhouette. We recommend checking the individual product details to ensure the best possible match for your personal measurements.

How should I wash and care for my cotton cycling caps?

To maintain the shape and colour of your cotton caps, we recommend hand washing or a gentle machine wash at 30°C. Using a laundry bag can help prevent the brim from becoming misshapen during the cycle. Always air dry your caps naturally; avoid using a tumble dryer, as high heat can cause the elastic to perish and the cotton to shrink. For caps with technical linings or waterproof treatments, avoid fabric softeners to ensure the moisture-wicking properties remain effective for as many miles as possible.
