Manchester to London 2017 report

220 miles through the heart of England

01 September 2017

On Sunday, 3rd September, a pack of hardy riders undertook the fourth Manchester to London. Pedalling from the northern powerhouse to the capital in one day, they raised money for Ambitious about Autism. Headwinds sapped riders’ legs from start to finish, with a three-hour downpour at the end for good measure. Of the 183 who started, 173 crossed the finish line on two wheels – a testament to their determination, courage and camaraderie on the road.

“We’ll start together, and we’ll finish together.”

Simon Mottram, CEO and founder of Rapha, spoke at the sign-on at the Rapha Clubhouse Manchester, expressing his gratitude to the riders for taking the time to support a cause close to his heart. He introduced good luck messages from cycling professionals and broadcasters, the last of which was from Sir Bradley Wiggins, who revealed he would be riding too.

This was a day of challenges and rewards in equal measure, from the captivating scenery of the Peak District and beyond to the excellent ride food on offer from More? Artisan Bakery, well-earned coffees from the Rapha H-Van, and Science in Sport gels and powders to see riders through a long day in the saddle.

Rapha hopes to reach one million pounds raised for Ambitious about Autism, which means we need every rider to reach their fundraising target of £750. If you know someone who rode, please give generously. If you don’t, please look for a rider who deserves your donation by using the #M2L tag.

Manchester to London is not a race, but each year we work out the average riding time of the North and South riders completing the full distance to see who made it to the finish line fastest. This year the average times for both are considerably longer than previous years due to the conditions, and once again the South edges it.

South — 16:21:42

North — 16:34:47
