Versatile merino layer for winter cycling

The latest addition to the Rapha base layer system has been created for extended rides in cold conditions. The Winter Base Layer is made from 100% New Zealand merino and uses an 18.9 micron yarn for exceptional softness against the skin. The natural fibre is also itch-free, high-wicking and odour resistant. Made from a heavier weight yarn than Rapha’s regular base layers, the roll neck can be worn as normal for standard insulation, or with the neck pulled up over the face to work in the same way as the Rapha Winter Collar. The Winter Base Layer has raglan sleeves so bag straps won’t rub, while flatlock seams ensure it won’t chafe.

Reviews:

"Deserving a full review of its own, Rapha's Winter Base Layer is a must-have companion to pair with your Rapha jacket. By sealing in warmth, rapidly wicking moisture and fostering exceptional comfort without donning the look of nerdy cycling apparel, Rapha's Winter Base Layer is without a doubt a flawless garment to add to your cycling wardrobe."

"Due to the quality merino and the roll top neck, I found the Winter Base Layer to be ideal for the very coldest days. At temperatures of around 5C, I felt comfortable wearing just the base layer with a mid-weight windproof jacket over the top. For anything colder, the additional of a mid-layer and proper winter jacket has me pedalling comfortably down to -3C, or about the coldest it's gotten this winter down south."

"Cyclists, take note. Rapha’s merino base layers are designed with flatlock seams to prevent chafing when riding. They come in a range of sleeve lengths as well as styles. This particular super soft roll-neck can be pulled up over the face to keep icy winds out."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from stylish base layer I have the woman's version and I bought the men's version for my husband. We agree, it is a soft wool blend that has a stand up collar for under a wind jersey and jacket. In Boulder, Colorado, we have a few cold days but nice enough to ride so this was a good buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very warm! Bought for wear in single-digit temperatures, and having now done a few short rides I can say it is keeping me toasty warm (under my Castelli Alpha RoS). The high collar does a great job of keeping my neck warm (in fact, the only negative I can think of is that the neck in particular can feel over-warm come coffee-stop time!). Size wise, I reckon the guide is pretty accurate: according to the table I'm on the borderline of S and XS, went for the S and it's reasonably close fitting but not tight. Happy with that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Baselayer Took this base layer out for it's first use on an overcast day of between 45-50F. This layer combined with a light windproof jacket was more than enough to keep me warm. Honestly I was almost too warm. Even after a lot of sweating it continued to work well and I was never uncomfortable after roughly 3 hours on the bike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great for your cold winter rides I love this piece, as it keeps you warm on cold winter rides. I like that you don't need a separate neck warmer for this. The only thing is that I'd like the collar to be slightly longer so that it stays over your nose when you're riding (if you like it to). At the moment it's just about too short so it pulls down..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great winter base layer Bought this 3 weeks ago, worn this twice in cold weather with a long sleeve jersey and it kept me really warm. The long neck is a very useful part of the garment. As per usual, it looks smart and if I ever need to deliver milk tray, I will look the part.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Class This is just as good as all of Rapha’s other merino kit. The fit is perfect, especially the sleeve length. It washes really well as do all Rapha merino garments. Just make sure you use a handwash cycle and a merino specific detergent such as Woolite. I would love to see Rapha adding thumb loops to their LS base layers to aid putting them on without risking damaging the cuffs of base layers/jackets/jerseys. It would be a simple addition that would make this type of base even better.

Hello, the other base layers are recommended that you size down from your normal size jerseys/jackets. Is this winter base layer the same?

Asked by: vincenz
Hi, we recommend you also size down for this base layer. It has a high degree of stretch and comes up slightly large.

How is this differentiate to the regular long sleeve merino base layer besides a turtle neck? Is this base layer's merino wool material thicker than the long sleeve merino base layer?
