Lightweight merino-blend cycling base layer for year-round riding

Designed for all conditions, including high summer, the Merino Mesh Base Layer offers high performance and exceptional comfort. It is made from a proprietary, merino-blend Rapha fabric which combines the natural qualities of merino with a lightweight mesh structure for additional ventilation and improved moisture management. The Merino Mesh Base Layer has a dropped tail for a great fit on the bike, while flatlock seams and raglan sleeves ensure comfort. Finished with a Rapha logo tab on the chest.

Reviews:

“There is no better base layer than this mesh wool piece which is light enough for the heat of autumn days but, thanks to the merino, adds lots of warmth after the sun sets.”
Outside Magazine

“It’s odd to find an item of clothing that performs well across the seasons, yet that’s just what we have here with the Merino Mesh.”

“I’ve found that with the right windproof jackets it works well on cold winter days, and with thinner long-sleeve jerseys it manages to work into double-figure temperatures as well. I can’t think of another base layer that does this and works across such a wide temperature range.”
Cycling Weekly 9/10

“Amongst my initial thoughts when opening the packet were about the fragility of the mesh, but it seems it holds up to the rigours of Team Sky who use it – so thats good enough for me! In use it’s holding up to daily wear nicely, no loose seams, stretching or tears – I’m pretty rough with my kit in general so I was worried about longevity with it.”

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Base layer perfection This base layer is brilliant. A lot of base layers want to be that form-fitting, paper-thin layer that magically keeps you warm while taking every molecule of sweat off your skin and transferring it to the road as free speed. This one gets there. Mostly. It may not actually improve your average speed, but here's what it does do: It wicks moisture extremely well. It traps air between skin and outer layer, keeping you much warmer than you'd think such a thin layer of cloth could. Despite being diaphanously thin, it's solidly built. So often putting on these light, thin base layers is accompanied by a percussive chorus of threads snapping followed by unravelling, followed by a too-soon conversion to drive train wipe rag. Not these. I wear mine one size down from normal, ride them hard, and yet they are holding together two years later with nary a renegade strand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for Spring and Autumn I use this base layer with a long sleeve top on cooler spring days. It's good enough to keep you warm as you start off but doesn't allow you to get too hot as the morning warms up. The top is also good at wicking moisture away from your skin to the outer layers. Really impressed - would thoroughly recommend. I'm 5ft 8ins 68kg and a medium is a good fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wasn't sure how it would work, but these are aweso I was a little skeptical about how these baselayers would work in very cold weather, but they are awesome. They keep me warm and dry. What more could you ask for?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Standout piece I'll admit I was skeptical about this baselayer when ordering, but it has turned out to be a real standout piece. Don't let the mesh look out you off, you'll be missing out - it's extremely comfortable, it fits under my kit without bunching or movement, and the fit is just perfect (I'm a 5'3" lady with generous upper body strength for a cyclist, and I ordered the xxs). While I've only had the chance to wear it in cold weather so far (Northern Canada cold), I'm looking forward to trying it out in the summer to see how it functions as a warm weather baselayer. It has washed up really well so far (in a laundry bag and then air dried), and I've already ordered two more (another long sleeve and a short sleeve) so I'll have one ready for every occasion.

Hi, i live in South California, for what kind of temperature range this base layer is design for? shall i prefer the std sleeveless base layer? thanks

Asked by: livio
Hi, it is always hard to advise an exact temperature as this will depend on your own temperature regulation and exertion level. However, this base layer can be used in temperatures from 40-55 degrees Fahrenheit. It can be used in colder conditions if combined with a warm jacket.

What size would Rapha xxl compare to up against Assos ?

Asked by: Kps1
Hi, it is difficult to advise the size compared to another brand. The best size is often the same as Assos but it is best to follow the sizing guide. As always we do have a free 90 day returns policy.

For someone in between sizes, would you recommend sizing up or down? I have a 91cm chest. Thanks.

Asked by: ThirdSunday
Hi, it is hard to advise properly as we all differ in shape and form. We would suggest that if possible both sizes are purchased to try and compare. Them simply send back the one which does not fit for a full refund. We have a free 90 day returns policy.
