Longer cut cycling bib shorts

A recent invention, ‘three quarters’ were the brainchild of Edwig Van Hooydonk. The Belgian hardman had the idea after winning the Tour of Flanders in 1989. Riding in horrendous conditions, the conventional shorts he chose to wear on that occasion had aggravated a recurring knee problem. His solution was a pair of cycling shorts that stretched below the knee and offered an elegant alternative to the wrapped bandages routinely used at the time. The new look (in smart WordPerfect dark blue) was introduced in 1990 and gained further international exposure when Van Hooydonk returned to Flanders to win again in 1991.

Rapha’s ¾ Bib Shorts use a special, fleece-backed Thermoroubaix fabric to ensure maximum comfort. As with Rapha’s regular bib shorts, the ¾ bibs are made from a luxury mesh material with a large cutaway section in the back to prevent overheating. The shorts also use the same, top-of-the-range pad from specialists Cytech with slim padding and a chamois finish. The ¾ bib shorts have flatlock stitching throughout to prevent chafing and are finished with soft gripper around the legs. Stylish white panels on the lower legs improve visibility.

Reviews:

"The fit is absolutely spot-on and the supremely comfortable Roubaix fabric actually makes them ideal for spring and autumn, but also the worst winter days."
Cycling Plus / Bike Radar ****½

"They’re warm, stretchy and as comfortable as a soft blanket on a cold, quiet evening. Wind deflection is top notch. I’ve worn them down to freezing temperatures as well as up to 50-degrees and always felt thermo-comfy without being overwhelmed by too much warmth."

"Comfortable kit especially once worn in with a real quality air as expected of Rapha."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fit and Comfortable These are excellent bib shorts, I have tried a range of brands and these are the most comfortable 'out of the packet' that I have worn. The fit and finish are excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice and Cozy The pad is a pleasure from the moment I slide on to 50 miles into my ride. Favorite pad of any bib. These are warm and toasty without being stuffy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from build quality.... I've resisted paying this much for bib shorts for years - how can one pair be that different to another..? I managed to get these in the sale (and was in the market for a new pair of 3/4 shorts) -as soon as rode with these for the first time, I realised what I'd be missing. Comfort that I've not experienced before in the seat, kept me warm when cold, cool when warm. How do they do that?! Lots of companies make these claims, but few actual do it. Also the Rapha styling / logo is nice and subtle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect solution for fall/winter riding. I've always used 3/4 bibs during fall/winter season. A few weeks ago it was time to replace them, so being a happy camper with their regular bibs, I decided to give the Rapha ones a go. They're just perfect, the Thermoroubaix is very performant, fit is second to none (be sure to order one size bigger then normal, they come TIGHT). The chamois is super comfortable and last but not least, they look very stylish. If 3/4 is your thing, give them a go!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best bibs ever I bought these a month or so ago, already had a pair. Best bibs I've ever owned. Use them all the time in late autumn, winter and early spring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super comfortable with warmth For Northern California's relatively mild winters, I wanted some extra coverage in the knees ands shins without a full tight. This 3/4 bib short was perfect. I'm getting back onto my bike, so even for the extra pounds that carry on my 178 cm (height) frame, the bib shorts felt snug without being over 'pro-fit' (I wear a Large, and XL for Rapha's Pro Team line in most instances). The straps are very comfortable (i.e. no evident pressure point(s)). I also appreciate the reflective designs on the bottom of the legs. One thing that I did notice is that after the 3rd/4th ride in these bib shorts, thread from one of the seams in the inner thigh area started to come undone. I wash my Rapha kit carefully (cold water wash with similar materials and then hang dry), so was a little surprised. However, I took it to the RCC in San Francisco, and they are processing the repair as we speak.

Would these be compatible with Rapha leg warmers?

Asked by: theantichristy
Hi, these 3/4 Bib Shorts were not designed to be worn with Rapha Leg Warmers. The bibs are fleece lined and so this is not necessary. If the bottom of your legs were still cold, the next option would be a pair of bib tights.

I find the core bib shorts in medium to be a bit tight and the brevet bib shorts in medium to be a bit loose. Which do these fit more like?

Asked by: gravelgrinder
Hi, you are in luck as these shorts have fit in between the two shorts you mentioned. The fit is closer to the Brevet Bib Shorts.
