Arrival Day

Arrival into Venice Marco Polo airport (VCE).

From Venice we’ll transfer directly towards Vicenza and an afternoon tour of Campagnolo whilst your bikes and bags are transferred to our hotel in Casalecchio di Reno on the northern edge of the Appenines. Following the visit to Campagnolo, a second transfer south awaits to the first hotel of the journey.

Accommodation

Hotel Calzavecchio, Casalecchio di Reno

Day 1

We roll into the Appenines today. Some of Italy’s best riding lies in these mountains and the Giro d’Italia pays homage to this today with a “classic Appenine stage” starting in the town of Ponte a Ema and finishing in Bagno di Romagna - where we will intersect the race for the first time. To keep the riding distance and climbing manageable (and not to destroy the legs on the first day!) we’ll transfer by vehicle south from Casalecchio di Reno. Our hotel for the night is in town, and the race passes through once before the finish line. Its likely that this start will see a major shakeup of the General Classification as the climbs of the Appenines test the favourites legs and which teams can control the race.

Accommodation

Roseo Euroterme Wellness Resort, Bagno di Romagna

Day 2

Departing the Emilio-Romagna we ride into the heart of Tuscany and the Chianti Classico region. We visit roads made famous by both the Giro d’Italia and the Strade Bianche – Eroica races. Our route of around 135km takes us to Siena and tonight we’ll dine in town for the full culinary experience of Tuscany.

Day 3

Joining up the cities of Siena and Lucca today. We continue the exploration of Tuscany before arriving at the walled city of Lucca. The route of around 125km takes in the towns of San Gimignano and Castelfalfi for lunch.Dinner tonight at the fabulous Da Pasquale in historic Lucca.

Hotel San Marco, Lucca

Day 4

We close the first sector of our Italian journey today by riding across the Northern Appenines to Casalecchio di Reno.

Accommodation

Hotel Calzavecchio, Casalecchio di Reno

Day 5

Today we transfer by vehicle from Bologna towards Bolzano in the heart of the Sud-Tirol. Our hotel allows for a good loop-ride on arrival. Alternatively a day away from the bikes can allow for a visit to a Messner Mountain Museum

Accommodation

Art & Design Hotel Napura, nr Bolzano

Day 6

Today we ride in the Adige valley, taking in a large portion of the traffic-free cycle path through apple orchards. Our hotel for the night sets us for the next 2 nights, in preparation for the arrival of the Giro d’Italia. Those looking to really tests the legs can complete an out-and-back of the Passo dello Stelvio from Prato and the famous hairpins that the Giro will descend the following day.

Accommodation

Solden

Day 7

Today is the Queen stage of the Giro. A monstrous 227km and 5,400m elevation. We’ll take the opportunity to see the race twice – on either side of the Stelvio as it passes. Our ringside seats will see the race unfold before us as the General Classification riders fight for pink.

Accommodation

Solden

Day 8

Today we ride two classic climbs of the Giro d’Italia – a Queen stage of our own. Completing the 48 hairpins of the Passo dello Stelvio before crossing the Passo di Gavia from Bormio. Those who are really game can also tackle the Passo di Mortirolo from Monno. We spend the night in Sondrio.

Accommodation

Grand hotel della Posta, Sondrio

Day 9

Our final day of riding takes us to the shores of Lake Como. Crossing by ferry from Varenna to Bellagio, we climb the Madonna del Ghisallo and visit the church of the Patron Saint of cyclists. Experience the roads of Il Lombardia before arriving into Como for your final night.

Accommodation

Como

Departure Day

Before your afternoon departures we visit De Rosa. One of the finest brands of Italian cycling, eponymous marque founded by Ugo de Rosa has built frames for many of the champion cyclists - Merckx, Geminiani, Motta, Moser just to name a few. Enjoy this final delight of Italian cycling culture before a transfer to an agreed onwards journey location in Milan (Hotel or airport).

Customer Testimonials

Last week, Ben led the Rapha team (Ben, Jonny, Mattia and Franco) in delivering us an outstanding Dolomites experience. In a week where we copped a fair bit of inclement weather, our group of 11 riders were struck by how hard Ben and his team worked each day to make our trip a memorable experience – it was above and beyond all of our expectations. They are a terrific group of guys, and their efforts were really appreciated by the people on our trip.

— Bespoke trip rider, June 2016

I enjoyed the scenery and the challenge of the ride.

FAQ

I want to organise a custom trip. Is this possible?

Absolutely. We have created dream trips for families, groups of friends, honeymooners, business associates and corporate clients. Everything is possible, but every bespoke trip is unique, so it’s best we talk you through it from the earliest stage.

Can I make a group booking?

Yes – family members, colleagues or friends usually find that embarking on a group adventure makes it even more fun and rewarding. However, trip places are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
