The Rapha Continental UK Assynt

By Guest Author • 11th May 2012 11:47am • Posted in Rapha Continental

Words: Max Leonard

"Ardnamurchan Point to Cape Wrath: north-east seven to severe gale nine; backing north; six or seven later…"
– The Shipping Forecast

The first Rapha Continental UK ride explored Assynt, a remote area of northwest Scotland. The riders encountered gale force winds, roaming deer and – at the end of four miles of broken track – a beach of white sand that would not have been out of place in the Caribbean.

The Rapha Continental UK films will document the roads, landscapes and people of the British Isles. Assynt was the first stop. The film will be unveiled very soon.

The ride looks H-E-L-L-I-S-H. Love it!

Good to see someone else cycling on my home patch - it can be quite a lonely experience up here at times. Did a 112 mile loop including the Assynt area last weekend and I got snowed on. When the weather is good there is nowhere better in the world. If the weather wasn't bad most of the time you wouldn't appreciate it when it is good.
Looking forward to the film.

The offroad aspect is even more hellish up there…Swimming in the sea off Durness in March…brings back memories…

The Rapha Continital rides are soul stiring to watch and read about. They inspire my rides and provoke me to keep exploring the valleys, hills and mountains around Portland, OR. I aspire to be one of the "characters" in a Rapha Continental ride one day - out in the elements and environments of epic wide open spaces with my bike, friends and the personalities we are destined to meet. Can't wait for this next RCUK film.

This relatively unexplored corner of Scotland is an absolute gem. My wife and I have been there at least a dozen times and it keeps calling us back. My first ever 100K on the bike was from Achnahaird to Durness. Majestic. Can't wait to see the film!

What are the odds of linking to route maps?
… or is that a "the lawyers won't let us" thing ?

cheers
