The Rapha Festive 500

By Joe Hall • 14th December 2010 11:30am • Posted in Rides

Riding hard at Christmas is not a paradox. As you stuff your belly with food and soak yourself with booze, the roads may seem empty. But they aren’t. This year riders across the globe will be squeezing themselves like oversized elves into tights and overshoes and heading out to go the distance, leaving the turbo trainer in the garage.

Why not ride everyday of the Christmas week and move into the New Year fit and refueled? As Rapha's superhuman Graeme Raeburn demonstrated last year, clocking miles over the festive break is possible. He rode over 1000km in a week. See » 1000 Xmas Km. We’re throwing down the gauntlet and challenging you to ride 500km between the 23rd and the 30th December 2010. Rather than let the holidays get the better of you, we want to see riders worldwide taking up the challenge and joining us to ride 500km in a week.

We want you to submit any kind of hard visual evidence, whether it be photographic, Garmin data uploads, illustrations or divorce papers. The most visually engaging or inspirational submission will win our Deep Winter Training Bundle, featuring the new Deep Winter Tights, Winter Jersey and Rapha Overshoes. The first 100 to prove (somehow) they have completed the 500km will receive a limited edition 500km woven badge featured above.

Also, Hope have kindly donated a Vision Two light as an additional prize.

• To submit your entry post a link in the comments box below to where on the internet you will be documenting the evidence. This could be on your blog, Flickr, Vimeo, YouTube, Map My Ride, Garmin Connect, a series of tweets on Twitter, or your Facebook page.
• Alternatively upload images, video and words to our Facebook wall or Twitter:

Who's in? 5x100km rides or 70km a day?

Jan Sotorník

14th December 2010 01:19pm

I'm in, not sure if i will complete all 500km but it sounds like fun.

I will try to upload some notes (in English) from my rides here http://vjednomkole.posterous.com/

Joe Hall

14th December 2010 01:20pm

Great Jan, thanks and good luck!

James Podziomek

14th December 2010 01:53pm

500k with temps in upper 30's(f) and snow on tap for two of the days… Sounds like a good time to me.

Ian Winfield

14th December 2010 02:41pm

May squeeze in a 100km, one or two 70km and a couple of 50km but the family commitments will be keeping my mileage down.

Stefan Rohner

14th December 2010 02:48pm

who is doing the Autumn Cup? ;) from 01.10-31.12.2010

purple_mj : 267h 50min
me : 258h 15min

still 16 days left to keep up….

Brian Palmer

14th December 2010 03:18pm

i'll document my kilometreage (is there such a word?) by tying a rapha scarf to a tree nearest each day's finishing point. a bit more rudimentary than a garmin but we're less technologically inclined this far out.

Club website Stefan?

Stefan Rohner

14th December 2010 04:04pm

James, yes ;) just a stupid joke.

Purple, we could start the 23.12 in the morning, ride non stop, day and night + next day, only food stops, we will arrive back home Christmas Eve, with 500km ;)

Mike Papageorge

14th December 2010 04:51pm

Seth, you're a lucky person. I rode up the beach on a cruiser when I was in South Beach… If you can get a picture of yourself beachside with your machine, you're on to a winner. Merry Christmas!

Ben Wooliscroft

14th December 2010 06:52pm

My wife and I will have a go, but it feels unfair to do it in New Zealand's summer if you're all slipping and siding around the snow and ice. Proof available on Garmin, Facebook and anywhere else I can put it

I'm in and I'll post to Rapha's Facebook. Hoping it's warmer that week than the six below I woke up to this morning.

15th December 2010 04:17pm

hi from estonia. we have 100 cm of snow so i ll do 1000 km of heavy snowmobiling and 200 km cross country skiing! cool?

Andrew Parker

15th December 2010 04:19pm

So that's 310 miles for the non-metric, I will give it a bash! Will upload through the Rapha Facebook Wall.

Joe Hall

15th December 2010 04:21pm

Alo, that's very cool! Sounds good.

Krzysztof Tralewski

15th December 2010 04:45pm

310 miles? As long as there are pubs on the way.

Rijnen Rik

15th December 2010 05:04pm

500km is not that much. It will take to days if you are really though. But attending will influence my preparation time for the examinations that will be taken just after Christmas and New Year.

Murray Hardie

15th December 2010 05:29pm

sounds like decent challenge to me count me in - will post Garmin data to FB http://www.facebook.com/murraygh

Dominic Estall

15th December 2010 05:48pm

I want that woven badge !
Will sort the evidence out somehow ….. keep me on that list !

Good luck all !

Jon Cannings

15th December 2010 05:53pm

Brian Palmer must be a rich and good customer of Rapha if he can tie Rapha scarves to tree's willy nilly.
My idea for doing this is quite a novelty one, will get it sorted hopefully in time. and will be the easiest to document. the question is, before breakfast or after dinner?!

Edward Juan

15th December 2010 05:57pm

Damn, only if this contest had happen last year I would've qualify in a flash. I biked from San Francisco along the coast to San Diego in 10 days during christmas week to new years.

But 310m/500km doesn't sound bad. I can probably force my boyfriend to do it with me in 4 days.

Joe Hall

15th December 2010 06:05pm

@Dominic, commuting miles definitely count!

Scott Kingsley

15th December 2010 06:14pm

Hmm, not sure my work schedule will cooperate, and it is dark by time I get home. Does riding the trainer outide, in the dark, count? Prefer not to ride in my area with lights. Drivers/roads are not friendly enough.

Troy Coleman

15th December 2010 06:27pm

How about this for STRAVA users?
http://app.strava.com/clubs/rapha-festive-500

tim edward

15th December 2010 06:36pm

Does "feet ascended" count towards anything? You definitely work harder for the miles up here in the hilly North Country!….mind you I s'pose there's more downhill too!

Troy Coleman

15th December 2010 06:37pm

Or better yet, we can add it as a STRAVA event for mo' betta tracking…

Jens Voigt

15th December 2010 06:40pm

I'll be doing San Diego Xmas bike ride, about 400 miles (650 km) between 12/25 and 12/31, plus extra mile options. Eventually the ride will be posted on my blog at http://www.tourofcalifornia.org/. In the meantime, I'll add links to Garmin data and pictures to my Twitter account, a feed of which can be viewed at http://www.tourofcalifornia.org/2006/01/about-bernd-straehle.html.

I'll document on.. http://velodeco.wordpress.com/

Fun idea, just what I needed to get off the couch. But… only 100 badges? Come on Rapha, how about 500 badges for 500km? Will post on your wall.

Peter Lunt

16th December 2010 02:09am

If it is not snowing in Kuala Lumpur I'll give it a go. I'll post rides on Garmin Connect, under the unimaginative nickname of Peter_Lunt. As I read it 23-30th Dec is 8 riding days, or less than 40 miles a day. Always looking for the easy way out ……

justin riley

16th December 2010 02:39am

Colin Bain

16th December 2010 09:37am

Will Have a go…..could be quite warm here in NZ, sun burn and heat exhaustion could be an issue. Could use my cycle tan as evidence of km's if acceptable.

Joe Hall

16th December 2010 10:07am

Suntans are certainly acceptable - Even us poor buggers in the UK might get a weatherbeaten glow if we spend enough time out on the roads.

Scott Hainline

16th December 2010 11:00am

Just overheard my wife telling my in-laws that I'm "como una cabra" and took on this "apuesta" during the holidays. Nice :)

Aaron Ferguson

16th December 2010 10:20pm

Assuming the roads stay dry enough to ride efficiently, spread over the entire 8 days, that's only 37.5mi per day, which is nothing. Considering all the pumpkin pies I've eaten over the last month, I'm thinking this would be a good thing to get involved with.

Christopher Downham

16th December 2010 10:22pm

I'm going to give this a whirl. Hopefully Father Christmas will bring me some warming clothing for my fingers and toes so that I can still work by 2011. How many km to a mince pie is the question?

16th December 2010 11:21pm

I am in as well. But, I think since I'm traveling in New Zealand where it is a balmy 20c nearly every day, I will probably have to go some extra distance or something else epic. Maybe I get extra points for being loaded with panniers.

Sure - I need some riding, better register here if I actually reach 500 …
And yes, we have some 10-20 cm snow in Sweden. More predicted this evening.

Stuck in London because of the snow. I may take up this challenge as part of my training for the Gran Corsa. You can follow me on Twitter via @GranCorsaWillem and donate to the good cause via http://www.virginmoneygiving.com/willemplantagie - the more you give, the further I will cycle next year. Count me in, going to do a combo of gym, turbo, ice rides, at festive cafe runs.

Patrik Andreasson

20th December 2010 12:32pm

I'd love to give it a go even if I doubt I will have enough time/stamina for the full 500.

Question:

My only means of providing proof would be to take pictures of my very basic bike computer as I go along. Is that ok? If it is I'll probably post my progress on your Facebook wall.

Thanks for the challenge and good luck to everyone!

Ben Brown

20th December 2010 01:08pm

Hi Patrik - we are after the most creative or inspiring proof! I guess if you spliced them together into an animated gif/video flickbook that would be cool. …wait that is pretty good…

Patrik Andreasson

20th December 2010 04:13pm

Ben, good advice.
I realize that the festive concept is "the more the better", not only in distance but also when it comes to presenting "the proof". But, I'm a hopelessly analog person. I'll be a happy man if I can find the time to participate - and very, very happy if I can complete all 500 kilometres. So much snow on the roads here. Has been for about a month now.
But I'll do my best, both on the bike and the presentation.

Thanks :-)

Ben Brown

20th December 2010 04:23pm

Patrik, a simple photo with a witty caption could well be the winner! In fact, if 500km of xmas training could be summarised as that we would be more impressed than a multi-page data log. I only ride with a basic speed/distance computer myself (and an iPhone for pics).

Good luck with your riding!

I decided to ride a celebratory prologue of the Festive 500, 15 miles starting at midnight. I rode alone – but not lonely – through the deserted streets of Los Angeles, in residential neighborhoods where people were asleep on their beds, to iconic boulevards – Sunset, Hollywood – where people slept on mattresses made of wooden bus benches and concrete sidewalks. I never felt more alive.

And I've woken, after seven days of rain, to a glorious day of sunlight, with a ride to the sea planned for this afternoon.

Off to a good start. Logged about 165(miles) to date.

Ride 1:
Rode after work in the dark. Start temp was 60 so I used the winter jersey and 3/4 bib with a lightweight gilet as backup. It never fails, I am always sporting the gilet as by the time I head home.
http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/34512560/

Ride 2:
Rode in daylight. Temp was 70 plus ending in 65. This ride just extends the previous day's route to include a Starbucks break. Went down for a nap with latte in hand while the sun warmed my face. I woke surprised yet ready to finish off the ride. recovery meal consisted of German sausages, dumplings, saurkraut and spetzle - YUM.

http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/34511968/

Ride 3:
Christmas Day. Weather is awesome. Sunshine and 78. Wind made the ride slow going. The rodes were lonely, devoid of riders apart from the occasional childs first bike scene.

http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/34513078/

Day 4:
No ride. I attended a friend's second child's Bris. How they keep these infant boys from screaming as the hack away at their manhood I will never know.

I will work to add pictures to the mapmyride maps.

Merry Christmas and Ride on

Day 1 - 40km
Day 2 - 40km

Still have 245km to go.. in 2 days.. so wish me luck!!!

Kay Bowen

28th December 2010 05:49pm

I cycled to and from my mum in law's for Christmas - 111km each way, despite different routes on the way up ( to Surrey) and down ( to Southampton). I can now categorically say that it is uphill up the country and downhill down the country - lots of fabulous descents today. I have loved meeting lots of other cyclists and triathletes, but not found any of them to be doing the 500. I am up to 392k, 2 days to go. Loving it. Mostly.

Dave Wyman

28th December 2010 09:03pm

180km remain for me. I've tried to make every ride unique in my home town, Los Angeles: plenty of climbing one day, laps around my neighborhood another, a night ride, beach rides north and south, a ride with a local racing club, bike paths and park roads.

I am finished. I live in St. Louis, MO USA and finished the Festive 500 today, 12/28 at approx. 3:00pm central time. I rode through freezing temperatures, snow, sleet, ice and tons of other nonsense. It was cold and windy- It was ridiculous. It took me approx. 23 hrs including rest stops. My proof lies in the two Garmin files I have linked to at the bottom. I use an Garmin Edge 500 device and planned to make one continuous 500km file by never reseting the gps. I just pressed start at the beginning of a ride and then stop at the end. A bit more than halfway through I plugged the Garmin in to charge it and it automatically reset so I started another file. The first file logs 181.47 miles, the second logs 128.25 miles. Thanks for the challenge, I am very pleased to be finished. Good luck everyone!

Finished today, 312 miles plus a few hundred yards. thanks to Tony for drafting me, I put in 108 today. Never thought I'd do this in 4 rides. Beautiful weather, unlike St. Louis which sounds grim. And PCH reopened so we rode up to Las Posas. Finished up at the Kings Head in true Fireflies style.

Ok! Finished. Done and dusted. A day by day report is available at http://fotografic-mjt.blogspot.com/

Day 2 - 40km
Day 3 - no km
Day 4 - 40km
Day 5 - no km
Day 6 - 135km
Day 7 - 120km
Day 8 - 125km
Total - 500km

Feel good, but my legs are numb! Will be out again tomorrow, but a nice slow recovery ride. It'll be a nice balmy 30 degrees in Maputo, Mozambique. Ok Rapha, do I get my Merit patch now?!

Kay Bowen

30th December 2010 05:28pm

Hi, I am all done, with a puncture at 485km as my only incident.

http://magazine.bikeradar.com/category/cycling-plus/

Is my official blog, but nothing will be up on there till after the weekend as I guess no one at Cycling Plus magazine will be in the office till after the holidays. I hope you enjoy it, once it is up there. My Garmin data is all logged and public, so you can look at that too, I am kay90bee. The only discrepancy is that on one of my rides it looks like I managed 89km/h - this was actually my family trailing my route in the car with the Garmin, as it was not powered up sufficiently when I set off ( doh!) and so they followed faithfully the route I had taken. Thanks so much for this idea which has pushed my comfort zone up there, and I have enjoyed looking at the routes and fabulous scenery in other parts of the world where others have been taking part.

Was very happy to have a group of friends to ride with today to finish out the challenge. I'm not sure if I would have done it on my own today.

Probably my biggest week of training all year, and it was in the harshest weather we've had thus far. Most of the rides were sub-freezing with strong winds. The last two days were "warm" around 35 and felt great to finish off with.

Thanks for the challenge and motivation. Hoping I'm one of the first 100 so that I get a patch.

Cheers.

Sorry for the delay in posting my festive 500 efforts. Due in part to completing it 1 day late on the 31st, my personal objection to having a facebook account and waiting for my mate to post on his sexy bicycles facebook page. Here is the link of the evidience (Check out the cool city bikes as well!):

Thanks to Rapha for inspiring me to the challenge and congrats to all who attempted and/or completed. Particularly those in the frosty northern hemisphere. Like others I have enjoyed reading peoples blogs on their challenge.

I live in Perth, Australia. So had to complete the challenge in some extreme windy, sunny (UV) and hot conditions. My personal challenge was to complete in all on a single speed bike. My mate has recently started desiginng and custom building "Sexy Bicylces". Most of the challenge was riden on my Sexy Bicycles Blue Business single speed which was in the Sexy Bicyles 1st release of bikes. During the challenge I also rode 2 (1 fixed gear and 1 single speed) protype bikes which will be part of the 2nd release Sexy Bicylces.

Some points of note from my challlenge. I now have distinct sun tanned ovals on the back of my hands from wearing Rapha grand tour gloves. Despite applying sunscreen which seemed to dissipate in sweat during the longer rides, I also have distinctive sunglass tan lines and sun burnt calves, knees and arms. Some rides involved social stops for pints of fantstic West Australian brewed beers. Little Creatures Pale Ale and Ferel Brewery Hop Hog Ale for anyone who ever visits Perth and is after some good beer. Also my 3 days off the bike from 25th to 27th was due to christmas at my parents farm, boxing day music festival attendance and subsequent recovery day after music festival.

Cheers, Karl.

I had a lot of fun having a goal to reach by the end of the year. I ended up with 518Km, but started a day late (on the 24th) and finished a day late (on the 31st). I didn't realize the challenge was through the 30th until just now as I return to post the rides. About 1/3 of that total was on a mountain bike. Thanks, and happy new year to all! http://connect.garmin.com/explore?owner=kanga-steve
