Snow Motion

Di Joe Hall • 29th November 2010 03:21pm • Postato in Rides

Northern Europe is currently being devoured by snowfall and icy winds as the winter settles in. Which calls for extra base layers, warm tights, overshoes and concerted bravery to keep the mileage going. Even if a numb two-hour spin is all you can muster, we must fight back against the cold and keep riding.

© Timm Kölln

Think of Jens Voigt slaying ice-trolls as he hurtles through Brandenburg, or Juan Antonio Flecha ploughing along in the snow, or imagine Andy Hampsten attacking on the Passo Gavia while the rest of the them shiver and cry. Forget the turbo, that isn’t road cycling. Cranking up the heating and staying indoors is not an option. To quote Michael Barry: “No ride is the same yet the objective remains the same: to progress.”

Get out there.

Rode in -3° celsius and snow today near Lake Tahoe and I have to say the Rapha winter collar works wonders…was able to ride for 3 hours…definitely made it more comfortable to be out in the cold…

MInus 5 in the Peak District today, wrapped head to toe in Rapha. Toasty warm, came back home glowing, with a head full of the sunlit snow-clad hills of Kinder Scout. Where have all the cyclists gone?

Burgundy has been so snowy and cold, that 3 and green feels tropical. I'm just glad I didn't have to ride in the -5 mistral wind blowing a steady 40K in Lyon the other day. Tomorrow I'm heading out for 30K or so, and there's just enough snow left by the side of the road to give it a Winter feel.
