To say that the VeloNews Lunch Ride is pretty fast is a bit of an understatement, as illustrated above. The speeding tickets that were issued after the descent down Lee Hill were expensive, but they go far in showing what is capable down the ever popular ending to this afternoon jaunt. What they do not show are two things that were also factors on this Wednesday — the heat and the hills (and the altitude and the attacks of the other riders.) This is one of those mid-day rides that wastes absolutely no time at all in ramping up right out of the gate. Luckily, the varied range of cyclists on the ride made for great banter and even better company. Plus, the spotting of a pair of sparkling white Grand Tour Shoes on a pre-Ride the Rockies Brian Dallas was enough to make anyone smile. Ride on fellow lunch riders.

It was 5:29am on a Saturday morning. It hadn't dropped much below 30 degrees the previous night and the air was so thick with humidity you could chew it. People on the tail end of their Friday night out stared in bewilderment as cyclists assembled at the Long House, Singapore’s mecca for cyclists. Riders milled about, recognisable in their club strips through bleary eyes. Sat under the strip lights of this otherwise deserted hawker market, were a small crew of well-clad guys; they would be the fellow tormentors for the early morning smash.

There have been a great number of Lunch Rides going on around the country and lucky for us the Rapha Mobile Cycle Club has been on hand to participate. Just this afternoon we headed out into the steamy sunshine of Boulder, Colorado with our friends from VeloNews Magazine for their take on the mid-afternoon jaunt we have aptly named - the Lunch Ride. But, we may be getting ahead of ourselves. A few weeks ago Patagonia opened their doors to Ben and Ryan from the MCC and took them on their version of the rides that we all do when we are trying to put off just a few more minutes of work. We do not say you have to do this, but we certainly do recommend it. Patagonia is a company that we look to for a good number of things in the business of sport and adventure, so it was with immense pleasure that they welcomed us (and stepped in to pull a few shots) onto their Lunch Ride.

SUBMISSION: Matt Karre of River City Bicycles
A lunch ride that's been meeting for two decades, the Lawyers' Ride was started by a group of attorneys as a way to get in some miles during the work day. It has become the best known lunch ride in Portland, steeped nicely in tradition with just a hint of irony (a large group ride started by attorneys and judges rolling en masse through downtown streets. Regard is of course taken for traffic laws, if not to the letter.)

Next Wednesday, May 16th, we will once again head up and over Otto Miller, a gravel climb we have come to know and love. Over the course of the last few years it has become a staple of our riding routine. It’s also a ride that falls under an increasingly popular banner – the ‘lunch ride’.
Working in the cycling industry, we’re coming to know these rides all too well. The start time is always the same. Lunchtime. The distance? However far you can travel in your allotted time making sure, of course, you leave enough time to get back. They’re the rides we sneak in when we can, the hour (or two) when we can escape and mash the pedals for as many revolutions as the clock will allow. The level of effort is generally high. It’s about commitment. Committing to make the time and, in some cases, committing to skipping lunch.

Returning for its third (and thus far dampest) outing, Rapha’s Hell of the North saw a throng of riders convene at the Highgate village sign-on.
A tribute ride to Paris-Roubaix, the challenging 80km route combines roads, bridleways and farm tracks (oh, and some deep forest and ravine crossing for good measure). Rapha's version was, once again, held on the same day as the pro race, which this year saw Tom Boonen claim his fourth L‘Enfer Du Nord in emphatic style. Cementing his reputation as a genuine ‘légende belge’, Rapha's version of Paris-Roubaix offered a typically British slant on the race that sorts the hardmen from the boys.

In parallel with the Edinburgh Ronde ride we will also host a ride in the beautiful Hanshin area skimming the foot of the Mt. Rokko in celebration of the Tour of Flanders. The Ronde Van Vlaahanshin will be a 2-3 hour ride tackling some of the steepest short hills in the area.
Depending on the progress, we'll gather later that night at the yet to open Rapha Cycle Club Osaka to watch the race. No tables or chairs, just carpet.
