Rendezvous

Door Ben Brown • 21st October 2010 11:57am • Gepost in Products

We all know the problem. Organising a ride with friends. Or maybe not friends, more likely adversarial training partners, or perhaps someone you have never ridden with before. Arranging meeting for a ride can be a thankless task spread over a multitude of devices and communication methods.

And then, further to this complication of arrangement is the uncertainty involved in the act of meeting. An unforeseen puncture, a headwind from hell, getting lost, another unforeseen puncture (after two they become foreseen) – the epic could begin before the planned epic (or perhaps just a light training spin) has even begun. "Where the hell is Fausto?"

No more.

Rapha Rendezvous for iPhone is coming soon.

Given the new branch out into cosmetics, will it be scratch and sniff?

Ben Brown

21st October 2010 05:37pm

Hi Finn, no Android version yet I'm afraid but we will gauge interest.

Leslie, 'scratch and sniff', interesting. We will look at development for v1.1.

Chris Carpenter

21st October 2010 05:53pm

Will this a free app?

Andrew Schmitt

21st October 2010 05:55pm

It's Rapha. It must be expensive.

Steven Jauch

21st October 2010 05:57pm

Free? Dude this is Rapha.

Jeff Barkema

21st October 2010 05:58pm

Looking forward to this! How soon is soon? :)

Ben Brown

Very soon we hope. The app will be free. Honest.

21st October 2010 06:11pm

Nice idea. If they stick to their core principles, of being ‘more’ than traditional bike clothing brands (and I don’t just mean the price of gear) this should be free, or at least as little as £1, which many would happily pay.

It’s to easy to play the ‘this is Rapha, it must be expensive’ card.

When you buy clothing at Rapha you pay for the look, the quality, the brand, the stories and for things like this. People that do not buy Rapha are 'free riders'. They enjoy their stories without making an effort for it. And that's their right, because the prices are high and not everybody can afford that.I'm looking forward to buy more Rapha stuff because I want to look good on pictures they make at the rides I participate in ;).

How's this for gauging interest? http://gigaom.com/2010/08/02/android-sales-overtake-iphone-in-the-u-s/ Or this? http://www.businessinsider.com/android-iphone-market-share-2010-9

Us lowly Android users already outnumber your iPhone clientele. What more do you need?

Carl Lyda

22nd October 2010 04:34am

I would think Android users would prefer the Pearl Izumi app…

Erik Pavelka

22nd October 2010 05:53am

Seriously, Android please. I may be able to help get the Android version made. Drop me a note if interested.

Jon Moss

22nd October 2010 08:42am

Look forward to this :-) And iPhone development first makes a whole lot of sense, but agreed, Android would be a good follow up.

Stefan Rohner

22nd October 2010 12:46pm

lets see…. nice interesting idea. but do we all not know when our riding group meets/trains? meeting point? time? ;)

Martin James

22nd October 2010 12:59pm

Brilliant idea, I often slightly panic if I start off on time to get to the start of a meet but for various reasons not realise how far it is or the espresso en route is just too nice, I then realise I do not know the phone numbers of my fellow riders, at least with this app it seems like they will be able to tell what cafe I am in and wait a few more minutes!

Hi Matthias, the app will be available to the public. You will need an iPhone :)

Ben Brown

22nd October 2010 05:40pm

Hi Scott, yes there are a lot of Android users out there, unfortunately most Rapha customers appear to have iPhones. At the moment.

22nd October 2010 05:44pm

I'm reading this on my iPhone nuff said I'm eagerly looking forward to the ap make sure I'm the first to know when it's launched. Hail a future of bigger and bigger rides.

Tosh Fujita

22nd October 2010 05:45pm

Jens Voigt would not need this iPhone app. He trains alone because he drops everyone that tries to keep up… ;)

Richard Child

22nd October 2010 05:56pm

Android again please.
This could be a cool app if the mash up use cases are right, as I currently use a number of services to organise and track rides via web and phone. Rapha id is solid so the visual design should look good.

George Swain

22nd October 2010 06:36pm

Awesome. Can't wait to try it out. Looks like another great innovation from Rapha. Now, how about posting/hosting impromptu Gentlemen's rides/grand fondos/Twitter rides a la Lance? Now THAT would be a good app. I already know how to ride with my local knuckleheads.

Rob McMichael

22nd October 2010 08:07pm

Not very convenient that it's only available on iPhone, and not Droid or the Berry. As far as the clothing, sure it's pricey, but it's damn well made and great looking.

Mark Wojcik

22nd October 2010 08:22pm

Ben, your info about iphone is skewed. I know for a fact that your customer base overwhelmingly supports ANDROID. Please listen to your customers and include Android.

Raymond Walker

22nd October 2010 10:10pm

I would also love to see this on Android! I ditched the iPhone for a better carrier and options in applications a while back. It would be a shame if Rapha didn't keep on the cutting edge! ;)

Ben Brown

23rd October 2010 10:16am

Thanks for all the comments asking for Android support, duly noted. My 'skewed' info is that Rapha customers using iOS outweigh Androids by about 12 to 1. Rapha develops products that we actually use and need… I think I would have a hard time trying to convince most of the office to give up their iPhones! We will certainly investigate how practical it is to port the app if it is a success.

Arco Visser

23rd October 2010 10:54am

Another vote for Android. Adroid is growing very fast. I think you are underestimating the number of Android users among your Rapha customers. Please develop the app as soon as possible.

Stefan Rohner

23rd October 2010 12:22pm

Ben, people asked for android support, they did not ask others to give up their iPhones.

RICARDOU Antoine

23rd October 2010 12:25pm

what about blackberry peoples. Can we ride too ?
A./

Ben Brown

23rd October 2010 01:53pm

Hi Arco, I'm not guessing how many Android users we have - I know! Over a certain threshold it will become a possibility.

Hi Stefan, if you can excuse this flawed simile - development for Android would be like getting everyone mountain bikes (recumbents?) to test the clothing.

Andreas Stradis

23rd October 2010 02:19pm

Will it make my iPhone screen feel as soft as calfskin leather? Seriously, though, great idea - very much looking forward to it.

Slate Olson

23rd October 2010 06:10pm

Besides helping simplify the process of organizing group rides, is the rumor true that it will also make you more handsome?

Ben Brown

23rd October 2010 06:33pm

Well, riders of the opposite sex will be able to see your whereabouts and then ride with you, if you choose.

Charles Pearch

24th October 2010 10:25pm

Just downloaded it. I've tried changing a few things in settings and linking to my Rapha account but it doesn't remember them! A mate has set a group up and it can't seem to find it in the search function. So far not impressed.

Megan Bilodeau

25th October 2010 12:20am

If you do a hard re-start after installing, then log in, it will hold your settings. At least that's what happened in my case. Testing the invite function now.

Thanks!

I'm an iphone user but my 4 riding buddies are all on droid - so this wont be much use to me unless it's ported! It does sound good though…

25th October 2010 05:01am

Thanks Megan for the tip-worked perfectly.

Dave Wyman

25th October 2010 07:37am

I've set up a ride in Los Angeles. I see I'm the "Founder" and not long after posting the ride, someone else showed up under my name. I made him an "Officer," able to change the route description. I don't see any way to take away his promotion. Is it possible to do this if I want to (not that I want to).

paul goulden

25th October 2010 10:29am

Anybody know how to delete a ride ?

Ben Brown

25th October 2010 11:38am

Hi everyone, thanks for your early feedback! Seems like simply rebooting your iPhone may clear up some problems.

There is now a dedicated feedback form so we may collate all the bugs and suggestions you may have, please log-in to submit feedback, thank you:

Ben, I live in the tech dark ages, until I saw this (massive!) discussion I had never heard of Droid. So I am in the US and i started asking around, and hey everyone I talk to seems to know about it and many are using it. I arrived into OHare and billboards all over the place advertise the thing. America in my humble opinion leads the way. I know it will be a total pain in the arse for you but I would recommend that you seriously consider adding the droid and linking the two together if this is possible. I by the way have neither a droid nor an ifone. so i will just try to make the rendezvous on time and trust that my mates see me when I puncture. Mind you Ian Holt rode on and left me last year. Me bear a grudge……

Dave Wyman

26th October 2010 12:56am

Charles, you have definitely been a Rip Van Winkle when it comes to cell phone.

There's a reason you see so many 'droid billboards - the 'droids don't sell as well as the Apple phone.

In a few months, Verizon will carry the iPhone. I'm guessing some who enjoy perusing the Rapha website will say goodbye to their 'droids.

If you know how to navigate through craigslist and/or ebay, Charles, you'll be able to pick up some 'droids at bargain basement prices. ;-)

Now if I could just get my iPhone to WORK as a phone, I'd feel as if my life were complete and fulfilled.

Christopher Smith

28th October 2010 11:22pm

Great concept and idea.

Minor usability issue: the UI elements are too low contrast on screens that are on low to medium brightness, especially on the top bar.

Keith Robertson

29th October 2010 12:25am

Excellent little app so far. Keep it exclusive to the iPhone I say ;-) wouldn't want to ride with poor PC clone types! (only joking folks)…

Slightly confused about some of the functions, eg exclusions in the Group setup screen, what's it for?

I created a ride, then discovered the group function, can I link this standalone ride to the group?

Can any group member create a ride for all the members?

Thanks.

Charles
In terms of number of mobile phones, China outstrips the USA by 4 to 1 and India by 3 to 1.
I think you will find that mobile use in Europe is and has been for years far in excess of the States (approx 558 million mobile phones in Europe compared to 285 million in USA).

America leading the way… I don't thinks so. It's not about who generates the technology but how people use it… just look back a few years to the boom in SMS messaging. Stateside mobile providors just didn't get it whereas in Europe it exploded the mobile market and became the comms channel for a generation.

Ben has his server logs so he knows better than anyone what OS is hitting the site/application so let's leave him to decide as and when to spend his development budget.

Frustrated 'Droid' users could always try ripping up an old copy of Cycling Weekly, setting it alight and sending smoke signals… worked well for a previous generation used to life in the saddle until the telegraph came along (another European invention):-)

Now where did I put my Union Jack bib-shorts…

Anothe vote for Android. I have the new HTC evo 4 and i would take it over and iPhone anyday. I think time will tell that Android is here for a while. Thanks!

"Michael Walkley, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity, a global capital markets research company, said that Apple's and Android’s successes come down to more phone applications and greater support from AT&T and Verizon [compared to the Blackberry/RIM].

When the iPhone 4 becomes available for Verizon users in the first quarter of 2011, it could dent Android’s popularity, he said.

“I think when it becomes more accessible, quite a few consumers will switch to the iPhone and potentially slow down the growth of Android phones,” Walkley said.

While I have an iPhone, I'd love to see Rendezvous on Android phones, too - the more the merrier.

Some ideas for the App's functions/utility:

1) Any way to simplify the ride adding feature? i.e. having "templates" of past rides, such that you can easily select route/intensity/time all at once? Filling out each box for every ride is time consuming.

2) Any way to have weekly recurring rides? From a group "admin" maybe a ride could automatically "go out" i.e. Tuesday Night World Championships Hammer-Fest, and then people RSVP accordingly through the app and you see who is showing up?

3) Any way to have the App generate an email? i.e. if you have an email list for your club, could the Rapha App notify the list of the RSVP'd riders and ride details? This would make it the perfect "go-to" app even if many riders don't have iPhones or adopt the app themselves.

Love it though!

Isaiah Berg

5th November 2010 03:13pm

Other comments/suggestions for update:

1) There seems to be no way to dissolve groups as a founder/administrator, nor any way to remove one's membership in a group once joined. Unless I am missing something?
