Red Hook Crit No. 4

The other night New York City was gifted the opportunity to see an amazing spectacle. The Red Hook Criterium sent 150 cyclists spinning around a foreboding crit course through the industrial wasteland of Red Hook on brakeless fixed gear bicycles. The beauty of Dave Trimble's event is that he manages to attract all walks of cycling life to the show. There are roadies, mountain bikers, track racers, and fixed-gear-freestyler-working-messenger-kids (or whatever the approved moniker is for this sub genre of cycling). A friend mentioned "this feels like high school, in a good way." We all laughed, but she was very right. Although, I don't remember having so much fun in high school.
The riders battled 20 degree temps to spin hot laps around the course. Fortunately for the spectators, our friends at La Colombe were pouring coffee (gratis) from their own H-Van. How could you not love these folks? That same H-Van added to the spectacle by parading the riders around the course for the opening lap. Although a parade lap would certainly be all the little van could handle for after the sound of the gun the race became excruciatingly fast.
The lead group drove such a pace that it quickly became a 4 person breakaway. After shedding riders one by one for 45 minutes, Mr. Daniel Chabanov would go on to win his second consecutive Red Hook Crit and thousands of New Yorkers would be thankful to have such a vibrant cycling community.

Nice piece, sounds like a fun night, but 'gifted'? Gifted is an adjective, not a verb - given would be a much better choice. Sorry to be nit picky people saying 'gifted' really annoys me - I probably just need another coffee and a bit of a lie down :-)

Have you had that coffee yet Robert? Please refer to the Oxford English Dictionary where you will find gift listed as a verb….

It's a case of TV cycle commentary chat ("…Lance Armstrong gifted Pantani the win…") filtering down into web cycle reporting. And a lot of that TV cycle commentary chat comes from English-speaking ex-pros who have learnt another language and then, subconsciously, reconciled the two languages. I would write more but the man with the hammer has got me in the final.

Gifted can be used as a verb. This usage is quite common and not a result of TV commentary e.g. A:"when did you get that lovely Rapha club jersey", B: "it was gifted to me by a fat man in a red suit ". Is this a cycing blog??

Hmm. I only recall Americans gifteding things. And Phil Liggett.
To quote LA: "No gifteds".

Rapha "gifted" the top 5 + top female with high end cycling jerseys. Thanks for the support and glad to have Rapha involved as this race grows!

Oh no, the shame! It seems that Paul is right - apparently gifted has been used as a verb since the 15th century.
Who's the man in the red suit though? and it there a chance of him gifting me a shirt too?
