Rapha Gentlemen's Race: September 12, 2009
23 teams started, and 22 teams officially finished the third running of the Rapha Gentlemen's Race this past Saturday in Oregon. Utilizing a proprietary seeding system where those expected to be fastest set-off last, the 6-person teams left the coastal town of Otis at a three minute stagger.
Being unsanctioned and unmarshalled, and at a distance of 137 miles, the Gentlemen's Race is meant to extend the boundaries of the road racer. From the look of the hollow-eyed storytellers at the finish line celebration, it seems safe to say that the route, the distance and the day certainly delivered.
A full feature including a wealth of photography, videos and stories to come in the next couple of weeks, but in the spirit of timely race results here is the final classification:

imagine my disbelief and absolute HORROR, when the nice lady behind the the counter @ the North Plain c-store [checkpoint #2] said we were the first team on the day to purchase beer. And this after not one team stopped at the yard sale on the detour outside of Beaver (I'm talkin' to you, Merkins…)

While we couldn't get there intact, Cyclepath did get four to the finish. Lovely day, and thanks to everyone who organized, volunteered, and participated. The next one cannot come soon enough.

Uh, top 10? My own spectacular cramping kept us from hanging w/ HPC and Nike to try and defend a podium spot, but it was a fine day. A fine route and a good day, if a little rough on the leg cables.

Thanks to all involved with putting this on, it was incredible! Nothing like the "Pain Tunnel!", where there was no place to go but forward! Team Beer had some cramping, some bonking but motored through together as a team! We cant wait for next year!

Kudos to the Merkins! It was a trip to roll by a rider in cutoffs, listening to a boombox, on the big climb over the coastal range. And that was after seeing the CRC guys hanging out on the detour with leis, taking a team photo. Thanks Slate! We'll enjoy the beer.

After racing a full NRC calendar this season, all I have to say is - THIS WAS THE BEST DAMN RACE OF THE SEASON! Thanks Slate - can't wait till next year.

Thanks for the great "ride". Suffered every minute of it. Our race began in Lincoln city trying to cram down waffles and bacon so we could get to the start in time. Any chance of seeing total ride time by team…..?

Positive, indeed. And for the record, no disrespect to the "EDDY MERKIN(s)," (After all, Chevil Kinevil is a hall o' famer in these parts). But more importantly, we simply felt that your fine steeds would handle the impending 45mph descent w/greater efficiency had those sweet Wald™ baskets been loaded properly with yardsale loot. Also, for the record, I rode an early 90's EDDY <b>MERCKX</b> Corsa SX (Columbus STEEL, natch) hydrated quite properly upon finishing, thank you very much, and caught a 6 a.m. flight home. Congratulations and Thanks to all who rode, and/or helped put this stellar event on!

I can honestly state this was one of the highlights of my year. Totally shelled at day's end but couldn't wait even one day before I was jonesing to shake the glorious hurt out of my legs. Epic rides are too few and far between…thanks for reminding me why I love this thing…

Whoa what a ride. We can't think of a better reason to endure 20 hours of road-trip-car-stink-funk than this incredible race. And Thompson Road at the end? Holy shit - amazing. We already can't wait for next year. Huge thanks to Rapha for organizing this madness and big big thanks to all the Portland folks for hosting us out-of-towners. Come on down to SF any time for a ride…

When will the video content be compiled? I'd be down to buy a DVD of some of that footage to remind me of that great race and keep me entertained on the trainer all winter. Couldn't ask for much better scenery.
