Stories
Experiences, guidance and commentary on the life of city cycling.
The Limpet
The fixed wheel was a rare beast in those days, so the curious looks from fellow commuters may have been admiration, but I suspect pity for the wobbling weirdo before them was more accurate.

To be a city rider of the purest sort one must simply be a city rider in the purest manner, for which there is no guide. There is only the right way, which starts but certainly does not end here: …
Hit it with a hammer
Before I became a cycling journalist I used to, amongst a few other unsuccessful career paths, fix bikes. It was the late eighties and mountain bikes, not fixies, were the weapon of choice for the well heeled London bike commuter.
Connections
If you’re doing something illegal (and a bike in the city gives you the freedom to use your intelligence rather than follow pointless rules) make sure your intentions are clear.
A Tale of Two Cities
Every city has its indigenous bike culture, the result of a subtle interaction of people with transport infrastructure, built environment, traffic regulations and bylaws, social custom and practice. To make a transition from cycling in one city to another is both to encounter novelty and difference and to see your origins anew.
Films
