It's a hot fact that cyclists love coffee. Caffeine fuels many a ride (according to one source it's also the most popular drug in sport) and cafés provide ideal way-markers for any two-wheeled journey. Here at Rapha we certainly enjoy a coffee or two and with our Cycle Clubs serving exceptional espresso and the finest filter brews around the world, we like to think we know a thing or two. Reasons for inspiration this season. Each time that the mail comes with a new publication carrying words, photography and design, we get that tingly feeling. Crack the spine a bit, skim back to front or just sit with it for a while. Whatever your routine, there is something special about printed stuff. Not to mention that book and magazine subscriptions make fantastic gifts, especially when they are for rare-ish treasures. So here we go:

The Road Racing Footprint

It is claimed that the first bicycle was conceived by an apprentice of Leonardo Da Vinci. The sketch of a two-wheeled vehicle rumoured to be in Da Vinci’s twelve-volume Codex Atlanticus is now under lock and key in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan. That the first idea for a bicycle arrived during the Italian Renaissance is fitting given Italy’s contribution to the history of cycling. The Italians are equally well regarded as shoemakers, or calzolai, and both the craft of shoes and bicycles are inextricably linked.
