How did you come to the cycling lifestyle? – I grew up in Albuquerque, had done some mountain biking and enjoyed riding along the Rio Grande but when I moved to San Francisco in 1994 the bug really took me. I moved without any idea of work and within my first week I had landed a job as a bike messenger and also as a bar back at the Cafe Du Nord. Being in that messenger lifestyle it's hard not to get hooked on bikes. Your bike becomes a very important part of your life. Bikes have remained a large part of my existence, for my career and recreation.

Describe your bike – This is my around-town ride, a Lemond Etape from the last year (I am only 97% sure this is true) that they were manufactured as Lemonds.
Lelliott's Lights

Chances are, you have seen the stylings of Mike Lelliot around your hometown. Those little rubber lights that adorn nearly every bicycle riding through the city. Knog has been around for a number of years doing their thing, but it is their frontman who stands out in a crowd. Any crowd. At 6' 7" Mike Lelliot may tower over just about everyone, but he is one of the most soft-spoken gentlemen you could come to know. He stopped by the Rapha North America office for a quick coffee and to show off a few new lights. Business done, we then rode to one of our favorite restaurants in Portland — Biwa. We took a moment to catch up with Mike over dinner and talk about riding through the city, any city.

You got a new bike from Tony Pereira earlier this summer. What is it and how did the idea for it come together?
My bicycle is a porteur complete with front rack, slender rear rack, custom stem, and my favorite element, a hand-constructed tail light. The bike is built with some pretty fab components (Dura Ace, Chris King, Shimano XTR brakes, Schmidt dynamo lighting, and Brooks leather).

You're looking good out there. What is this new bike that you're riding? Is this your first carbon road bike?
Thank you. My new bike is an Ibis Silk SL, but no, it's not my first carbon road bike. You'd have to go back to 1993 to report on that bike. This is, however, my first Ibis which is still sort of shocking for me to consider. I always wanted an Ibis but each season something else new and fantastic crept to the front of the line. I'm a little bit embarrassed about this because some of the bikes that I chose were pretty lacklustre. The Silk, however, is far from lacklustre. It's a great bike and I've had some great days on it lately.
