Versatile merino layer for winter cycling

The latest addition to the Rapha base layer system has been created for extended rides in cold conditions. The Winter Base Layer is made from 100% New Zealand merino and uses an 18.9 micron yarn for exceptional softness against the skin. The natural fibre is also itch-free, high-wicking and odour resistant. Made from a heavier weight yarn than Rapha’s regular base layers, the roll neck can be worn as normal for standard insulation, or with the neck pulled up over the face to work in the same way as the Rapha Winter Collar. The Winter Base Layer has raglan sleeves so bag straps won’t rub, while flatlock seams ensure it won’t chafe.

"Deserving a full review of its own, Rapha's Winter Base Layer is a must-have companion to pair with your Rapha jacket. By sealing in warmth, rapidly wicking moisture and fostering exceptional comfort without donning the look of nerdy cycling apparel, Rapha's Winter Base Layer is without a doubt a flawless garment to add to your cycling wardrobe."
– Subjective Cyclist
"Due to the quality merino and the roll top neck, I found the Winter Base Layer to be ideal for the very coldest days. At temperatures of around 5C, I felt comfortable wearing just the base layer with a mid-weight windproof jacket over the top. For anything colder, the additional of a mid-layer and proper winter jacket has me pedalling comfortably down to -3C, or about the coldest it's gotten this winter down south." ****½
"Cyclists, take note. Rapha’s merino base layers are designed with flatlock seams to prevent chafing when riding. They come in a range of sleeve lengths as well as styles. This particular super soft roll-neck can be pulled up over the face to keep icy winds out."

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice baselayeror ano Used this on a couple of rides and it's been warm, comfortable and wicks moisture well. Not tested in really cold temperatures yet, which was the main reason for buying, but confident it should be up to the job with the right layering. Fit is good and the roll neck negates the need for a snood and can be rolled down when overheating on a climb. Quality is nice and I've also used it off the bike as a baselayer for country walks, so I can see this baselayer getting plenty of use one way or another. My initial concerns that the Merino might be itchy (I have very sensitive skin) have so far been unfounded. Overall very pleased with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good base layer for semi-cold weather I live in Norway, and I bike to work every day. Recently, it was very cold here, as cold as -18 Celsius. Biking to work proved to be difficult. Hence, I needed something that could keep me warm. Wearing this base layer in combination with the Rapha Hardshell jacket worked fine in conditions from -4C to +6C. I really can not recommend this product if it gets any colder than this. This comes from a Norwegian guy, who is really used to cold weather conditions. If it gets colder than that, I recommend the deep winter base layer. If it gets warmer than the mentioned temperates it gets too warm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool top to keep you warm Really pleased with my Rapha winter base layer. They are great on the bike on colder days keeping you minimalistic as you don't need a buffer round you neck but the best thing is that I have worn these more off the bike. They look great with a jacket and some slim fit Jeans. In the t-shirt version I have bought medium and been really comfy (also worn as a T) but the polo necks I somehow needed a large for the same fit. They wash great, bung them in at 30 deg with a "delicates" liquid (just like all your other cycle stuff ;-) and hang straight after then ready to wear again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Style and efficiency for all ocasions The biggest charm of this product is that is amazingly confortable to use while biking and that it is so good looking it is almost unfair to the rest of the base layers out there. Both in and out of the bike this base layer is confortable to the touch and zealous at keeping one warm, dry, and cozy. This can be used underneath any other shirt or jacket and the high neck gives it an amazing elegant appearance without sacrificing any confort and keeping one warm and delightful to the touch in any occasion. Probably one of my favorite and most pragmatical Rapha product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great fit, and doesn't smell Great fit, and I like the looks too, has a ninja kind of feeling to it. Cycled a couple days in it so far, and I'm really satisfied. It is warmer, and has better ventilation than my previous base layer, and the greatest part is that it simply doesn't smell bad even after sweating into it 3-4 times. If your skin is sensitive it might itch a bit at the start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm! Fantastic base layer and warmer than I thought it was going to be, the built in roll neck is a genius idea, I'm a medium in all Rapha and bought a medium in this which fits great but could have possibly gone down to a small. I'm 5'10'' 38 chest.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from really nice item 5'9.5", 33.5" chest, 32" waist, 60cm arm length. 60kg. Chose the small size. Fits quite firm. I'm glad of the tight fit around my thin arms. There are a couple of cm or so of extra length in the arms which is great. Love the high neck; keeps the cool wind off. Fairly new to merino clothing. Wearing a gillet over the top, the chest area does get a bit damp when riding at a steady pace, but kept warm. Am looking at the 'deep winter' base layer also. Expensive products, but I think they will last some time with care.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from When the North wind doth blow! Great.... The Rapha Winter Base layer is a superb piece of kit. Really stretchy, a bit of extra length compared to other makes and very comfortable around the neck. Breathability is excellent and the hydrophobic nature of the material means I stay dry and warm inside it. All you need is to select the correct outer layer.

How is this differentiate to the regular long sleeve merino base layer besides a turtle neck? Is this base layer's merino wool material thicker than the long sleeve merino base layer?

Asked by: Gergely
Hi, The winter base is made from a heavier weight yarn than Rapha’s regular base layers, the roll neck can be worn as normal for standard insulation, or with the neck pulled up over the face to work in the same way as the Rapha Winter Collar.
