Longer cut cycling bib shorts

A recent invention, ‘three quarters’ were the brainchild of Edwig Van Hooydonk. The Belgian hardman had the idea after winning the Tour of Flanders in 1989. Riding in horrendous conditions, the conventional shorts he chose to wear on that occasion had aggravated a recurring knee problem. His solution was a pair of cycling shorts that stretched below the knee and offered an elegant alternative to the wrapped bandages routinely used at the time. The new look (in smart WordPerfect dark blue) was introduced in 1990 and gained further international exposure when Van Hooydonk returned to Flanders to win again in 1991.

Rapha’s ¾ Bib Shorts use a special, fleece-backed Thermoroubaix fabric to ensure maximum comfort. As with Rapha’s regular bib shorts, the ¾ bibs are made from a luxury mesh material with a large cutaway section in the back to prevent overheating. The shorts also use the same, top-of-the-range pad from specialists Cytech with slim padding and a chamois finish. The ¾ bib shorts have flatlock stitching throughout to prevent chafing and are finished with soft gripper around the legs. Stylish white panels on the lower legs improve visibility.

"The fit is absolutely spot-on and the supremely comfortable Roubaix fabric actually makes them ideal for spring and autumn, but also the worst winter days."
Cycling Plus / Bike Radar ****½

"They’re warm, stretchy and as comfortable as a soft blanket on a cold, quiet evening. Wind deflection is top notch. I’ve worn them down to freezing temperatures as well as up to 50-degrees and always felt thermo-comfy without being overwhelmed by too much warmth."

"Comfortable kit especially once worn in with a real quality air as expected of Rapha."

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comfortable..but These 3/4 bib shorts are very comfortable and can be worn in a wide variety of temperatures. I wore my last pair until they were worn through - took about 4 years. They do come up slightly smaller than the regular bib shorts, but that may be due to the material used. What is good is that the seat pad stays in place and is very comfortable. The longest I have worn mine was 8 hours, it started cool, but got progressively hotter - they were still comfortable. The only minor quibble was some finishing on my latest pair, just had some loose threads, they were properly sewn, just not tidied up - at this price would expect that to be done - but a minor quibble.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Useful item From reading previous reviews, I was a little unsure on sizing as several people commented on the tights coming up small. I usually wear a small in Rapha tights and classic bibshorts but went for a medium in the 3/4 and they fit perfectly. I am 175cm, 72kg Great chamois and well constructed. I have worn in 5 degrees celsius up to 15

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not quite 3/4 I bought this for the spring season as I've had good use from another pair of 3/4 bib tights from another manufacturer. The first thing is that these come up a bit longer than 3/4 on me (I'm 175 cm and fairly balanced proportions.) So with overshoes on, there's a gap of about 1.5cm between the shorts and the over shoes. Aside from that they fit well, no bagging or creasing behind the knee and the pad is comfortable on longer rides. The material is comfortable against the skin and keeps you warm in cooler temperatures. I love the reflective strips on the front.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bib shorts I've worn these several times and they are great for cool/cold weather riding. Very good muscle support, wind protection and comfortable. My only minor complaint is the material makes them a little slippery in the saddle.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rapha - 3/4 Bib Shorts As the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celcius it's a good very welcome feature 3/4 and warmer fabric. Improvement potential. All other Rapha bibs I own immediately the pad is immediately in place when putting them on. This short requires some adaption before and I also stop after some km to put the fabric and the pad right and from then on it's good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm snug bibs Bought these because I was getting cold in my core bibs even with leg warmers and I am not a fan of full tights. These are warm and after a little bit of adjustment after the first 500m especially behind the knee they are really comfortable. I am a large in core bibs despite being 6'6'' and 100kg and these are on the tight side when you first put them on but on a couple of longer rides they just got more and more comfortable. Pad is well placed and doesn't move and the quality over all is great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good product My first Rapha Knicks after buying lots of other items. These are good quality Knicks but quite long, they are almost full length and basically meet normal sock tops. The pad takes a bit of getting used to and a bit of time each ride to settle, but is very comfortable when it does. To be honest I'm not sure if They will be my favourites, but it's still early days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from When "Mid-season" becomes most of the year Let's be clear. I regularly whinge about Rapha's prices, but my cycling wardrobe is full of their kit, because they consistently perform brilliantly and are of the highest quality. I have bib shorts a-plenty and winter tights too; but was lacking any 3/4 length. My knees feel the Spring & Autumn chill, but I never fancied the faff of leg warmers, so I thought I'd try these. What a joy! The Cytech pad, fit and quality are the same as my other Rapha bib shorts, but these are just that little bit warmer - and cover up your knees completely. I find that they've become my "go to" bibs for anything that doesn't involve frost or suncream - say between 4C and 20C; they cover the range so well. The contrasting shin panels are distinctive and can only aid your visibility to other road users. Hopefully.

Would these be compatible with Rapha leg warmers?

Asked by: theantichristy
Hi, these 3/4 Bib Shorts were not designed to be worn with Rapha Leg Warmers. The bibs are fleece lined and so this is not necessary. If the bottom of your legs were still cold, the next option would be a pair of bib tights.

I find the core bib shorts in medium to be a bit tight and the brevet bib shorts in medium to be a bit loose. Which do these fit more like?

Asked by: gravelgrinder
Hi, you are in luck as these shorts have fit in between the two shorts you mentioned. The fit is closer to the Brevet Bib Shorts.
