Longer cut cycling bib shorts

A recent invention, ‘three quarters’ were the brainchild of Edwig Van Hooydonk. The Belgian hardman had the idea after winning the Tour of Flanders in 1989. Riding in horrendous conditions, the conventional shorts he chose to wear on that occasion had aggravated a recurring knee problem. His solution was a pair of cycling shorts that stretched below the knee and offered an elegant alternative to the wrapped bandages routinely used at the time. The new look (in smart WordPerfect dark blue) was introduced in 1990 and gained further international exposure when Van Hooydonk returned to Flanders to win again in 1991.

Rapha’s ¾ Bib Shorts use a special, fleece-backed Thermoroubaix fabric to ensure maximum comfort. As with Rapha’s regular bib shorts, the ¾ bibs are made from a luxury mesh material with a large cutaway section in the back to prevent overheating. The shorts also use the same, top-of-the-range pad from specialists Cytech with slim padding and a chamois finish. The ¾ bib shorts have flatlock stitching throughout to prevent chafing and are finished with soft gripper around the legs. Stylish white panels on the lower legs improve visibility.

Reviews:

"The fit is absolutely spot-on and the supremely comfortable Roubaix fabric actually makes them ideal for spring and autumn, but also the worst winter days."
Cycling Plus / Bike Radar ****½

"They’re warm, stretchy and as comfortable as a soft blanket on a cold, quiet evening. Wind deflection is top notch. I’ve worn them down to freezing temperatures as well as up to 50-degrees and always felt thermo-comfy without being overwhelmed by too much warmth."

"Comfortable kit especially once worn in with a real quality air as expected of Rapha."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super comfortable with warmth For Northern California's relatively mild winters, I wanted some extra coverage in the knees ands shins without a full tight. This 3/4 bib short was perfect. I'm getting back onto my bike, so even for the extra pounds that carry on my 178 cm (height) frame, the bib shorts felt snug without being over 'pro-fit' (I wear a Large, and XL for Rapha's Pro Team line in most instances). The straps are very comfortable (i.e. no evident pressure point(s)). I also appreciate the reflective designs on the bottom of the legs. One thing that I did notice is that after the 3rd/4th ride in these bib shorts, thread from one of the seams in the inner thigh area started to come undone. I wash my Rapha kit carefully (cold water wash with similar materials and then hang dry), so was a little surprised. However, I took it to the RCC in San Francisco, and they are processing the repair as we speak.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Warm- Great Fit This is a great 3/4 bib short for cool overcast days. Inside is extremely cozy, light and comfortable fleece. This worked well with changing weather conditions too and did not get too warm when the sum came out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feel great from 1st wearing. Have worn on 1- 5 degree, 4 hour winter rides in the peak district and found them really comfortable, no chafing/movement and warm , I do not mind the draft over my shins. The look is spot on. They wash well and should last as per usual with Rapha. I bought XXL ( my usual size for Rapha stuff as a 6ft 2" 88kg slim build with heavy legs); we are not all racing snakes as per Rapha photo shoots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I was looking for I was looking for an alternative to the bib shorts/knee warmers combo for fall/spring. The Thermoroubaix fabric is warm without being hot. The fabric around the knee doesn't bunch up like some other tights/knickers I've tried. Not sure what the thinking is with the white panels on the front. They're just going to get dirty from the spring/fall road grime. They probably would work better on the sides facing out with more reflective material. The gel wrapper/trash pocket is brought over from the bib shorts, but I don't see unzipping a jacket to use it. In any case, these are going to get used a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these knickers! I've had these for a couple weeks and after a few rides wearing them in mid 30's - 50'ish temps. I used to wear knee warmers with regular shorts but that combo lacked warmth in this temp range. I'm 5'9", 150, wear a small and they fit quite snug, which I like.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All day many conditions The product is incredible. It rests in the world between the full winter tights and the classic bibs. I rode starting in the SoCal winter sun and climbed well into the colder temperatures of snowy mountain climbs. Through all environments the bible kept my legs warm without overheating and remained so comfortable that most if the time I forgot I was even wearing it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fit! Great fit(for me), I've had severe fit issues with Rapha bottoms but these knickers fit perfectly.

Would these be compatible with Rapha leg warmers?

Asked by: theantichristy
Hi, these 3/4 Bib Shorts were not designed to be worn with Rapha Leg Warmers. The bibs are fleece lined and so this is not necessary. If the bottom of your legs were still cold, the next option would be a pair of bib tights.

I find the core bib shorts in medium to be a bit tight and the brevet bib shorts in medium to be a bit loose. Which do these fit more like?

Asked by: gravelgrinder
Hi, you are in luck as these shorts have fit in between the two shorts you mentioned. The fit is closer to the Brevet Bib Shorts.
