But ever since I got the call from Ben Lieberson that somebody had "crashed pretty bad" on what was otherwise a terrific group ride from Santa Monica into the beautiful canyons overlooking the Pacific Ocean, it has been a steady reminder of appreciation.

And it was this man, Giovanni Gerbi, who won the first ever edition of the Tour of Lombardy, in 1905. Originally named Milan-Milan and run over a distance of 230km, in its formative years it became known as the ‘World Championship of Autumn’.

The Falling Leaves

By Guest Author • 24th September 2012 • Posted in Misc

Words by Max Leonard

When the professional peloton take to the roads between Milan and Como for the Race of the Falling Leaves this coming Saturday, there’s a good chance the foglie morte will still be clinging to their branches. It also makes room for a new ProTour race, the Tour of Hangzhou.

Gossip travels quickly within the peloton, and at the 1985 Tour de France one story was being passed around by European riders. The Colombians, the rumor went, were doping. And they were doing so mid-race, out in the open, and for everyone to see. Like most rumors, this one took hold because it attempted to answer two questions that riders were asking themselves: First, how could these relative unknowns climb like they did? And second, what was the brown substance they were putting into their mouths during stages, which they also dissolved in their water bottles?

The Rigoberto Urán Cycling Club

By Guest Author • 27th June 2012 • Posted in Misc

by Klaus of CyclingInquisition.com

When Team Sky’s Rigoberto Urán was only 14 years old, his father was senselessly gunned down in the streets of Urrao, Colombia. In that moment, Urán became the head of his household, taking over his father’s job, while still attending school, and trying to spend time on a new endeavor that he’d only recently taken up: cycling.
