Merino under vest

Using the same weight merino and flat lock stitching as the regular merino base layers, this vest is ideal for warmer training conditions or city cycling. It is cut longer at the back for a good fit when in the saddle.

To maintain and protect your merino products we recommend using Rapha Merino Wash »

Rapha Merino Wash has been specially formulated for Rapha merino products, with a gentle action that cleans without stripping out the natural oils that are the key to merino’s performance. Used regularly, the wash will remove dirt and refresh merino garments thanks to ingredients that include Rapha’s Ventoux fragrance. Inspired by the plants and herbs that grow on the slopes of the ‘Giant of Provence’, the wash also has natural Cedar extract to help repel moths.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice I bought this to use under a jersey in cool conditions and haven't been disappointed. The quality is great, the fabric is comfortable and quite thin but keeps you nice and warm. It's not like other stretch vest base layers where they put loads of lycra in it but it does have a little stretch. The fit is snug and longer, to stop it riding up your back which is nice. I'm usually a medium in everything and this vest is no different so the sizing is correct. It does a good job of wicking away sweat as I haven't noticed it being wet on my skin but when removed it was drenched. Overall, I really like it and would buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! The vest fits comfortably. I like the long cut. I weat it under jerseys and shirts. A favourite all-arounder. It washes easily and wears well. Exactly what I expect from Rapha product--quality merino wool kit that does what it's supposed to do. Well done, once again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warning: may be habit forming Local cycling cultists insisted I try the base layer. Tried it. They were right. Now have several which I always wear. Rapha has it figured out. Especially in cold weather, layering on the merino, jersey and jacket let's you dial up the warmth and ventilation to stay comfortable as conditions change. Pretty ingenious.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best vest base you can buy ! This is my third. Fantastic quality. very comfortable, brilliant wicking. Washes beautifully time after time, machine or hand. Drys quickly. ideal if on long trip across France. Often wear under an ordinary shirt for warmth. Equally at home at 3 or 30 degrees C'. Pricy but worth every penny.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Spring and fall base layer The merino vest base layer is fine for commuting, for shorter maybe training rides . . . or for great style off the bike. I prefer the mesh base layer for extended rides and tours or a more technical base layer, if you must.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent base layer as expected I own a number of Rapha base layers and as expected this is the same high quality. Good standard of material and construction, non irritable seam stitching, nice sizing and not too tight or restrictive.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent wool piece Bought this a year ago and have worn it primarily for spring and fall riding. Size and fit are decent but the neck rides low. The sleeveless merino base layer would probably be a better choice for me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fragile Great fit and the grey color is great as an underlayer. However, it developed a hole after just one ride although it was worn under a heavier shirt so the fabric is too fragile for real life use.

If I'm having the best quality pro-team (super high-wicking & super-fast dry) Rapha jersey, riding in the tropical Malaysia whose temp can shoot to 40 C and very high humidity, why would i need another layer inside my jersey?

Asked by: LondonParisVeteran
Hi, in many riding conditions, wearing a base layer can help keep you warm or regulate temperature. In very hot conditions you will not necessarily need a base layer. However, a lightweight base layer such as a Pro Team Base Layer can simply act to make you more comfortable, and keep your torso covered if you wish to unzip your jersey.

How does this "Vest Base Layer" compare to the "Merino Base Layer - Sleeveless"? They seem to use the same fabric and a similar cut.

Asked by: Jos H
Hi, the fabric used is the same but the fit and construction of the products is different. The Merino Base Layer has a bike specific, close fit. However, it is has more stretch due to its ribbed construction. The Vest Base Layer has a fit more like a normal vest and has less stretch. I hope that helps.
