Passo by passo

“These are the high places of cycling legend. On their slopes, in the thin air that wreaths their passes, some riders have been broken, a few have, improbably, exceeded all limits of fortitude, others have merely survived, but survived.”

In this, the fourth volume in the series of Rapha’s guides to Europe’s iconic mountain ranges, writer Graeme Fife takes us up and over the Great Road Climbs of the Dolomites and Italian Alps in characteristic fashion. Illustrated with the photography of Peter Drinkell – probably his best work yet – the book offers an idiosyncratic, impressionistic exploration of 80 of the most eulogised and lesser-known mountain passes of northern Italy. Historical titbits, humorous observations and stirring stories from cycling’s past all feature, while striking double-page photographs and hand-illustrated maps and col profiles add flavour to a mighty tome that celebrates the greatness of the mountains.

Climbs featured include:

  • Monte Zoncolan
  • Tre Cime di Lavaredo
  • Passo Pordoi
  • Passo di Giau
  • Madonna del Ghisallo
  • Muro di Sormano
  • Passo dello Stelvio
  • Passo di Gavia

Praise for other books in the series:

The Great Road Climbs of the Pyrenees is a remarkably evocative piece of work… a portrait of the region that allows the imagination to run wild.
Richard Williams – The Guardian

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not As Good As I'd Hoped Having got the two Alps books and the Pyrenees one I was delighted to discover (unexpectedly) that another volume on the Dolomites has been published. I am riding there in Sept 16 and this is just what I needed. However I have to say that it is disappointing compared with the other books. Climb descriptions are not very detailed at all and this seems more of a history and travel book than one for cyclists who actually ride. But there is a short appendix in which some data appears in small graphs. The photographs all seem slightly underexposed and muddy. We are staying in a reasonably large village that does not even appear in the index or on the relevant maps. In summary an interesting coffee table book but not that useful as a route/area guide.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Excellent Writing, Photographs Are Disappointing I have traveled to the Dolomites a number of times and I am very familiar with the passes covered in this book. The writing is excellent - an informative and interesting compilation. Unfortunately, the photos in the book are underwhelming and disappointing. I consider this a missed opportunity to show the incredible beauty of the Dolomites and Italian Alps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Timeless Classic - something for everyone I bought this a few weeks ago to complete the series, but also because it's the 100th Giro in 2017. A group of us are spending 9 days climbing every col we can, to pay homage to the greatest 3 week race

Rated 4 out of 5 by from the cover is spot on great book, gives a special view of the regio, a shame is that the cover was abit damaged and there were a few pages doublefouled what is a real shame for such a piece of art and what is not cheap
