Who is it for?

Reconnect with your love for the bike and exploration. Raids are designed for independent riders with a thirst for going off the beaten track, and exploring lesser-known but nonetheless spectacular destinations and roads. You’ll still have access to a Rapha guide, full mechanical and logistical support, but the emphasis is on self-sufficiency, creating an adventure through wild and unspoilt landscapes. Each night we’ll greet you with hearty food and charming, rustic accommodation, to prepare you for another day’s exploring. It is cycling taken back to the essentials: a bike, a fantastic route to ride, and the self-imposed challenges that brings.

How Hard is it?

Because of the emphasis on challenging terrain and self-sufficiency, Raids suit the more confident, athletic rider, or groups of friends who may already have done a multi-day trip and want to challenge themselves further.

Arrival Day

Flights to Las Vegas and self transfer to the Hilton Garden Inn, St George. This night's accommodation is included in your itinerary

Day 1

St. George – Springdale

The Southern Utah Randonnée begins and ends in St. George, less than a two-hour drive from Las Vegas. Our first day of riding takes us to the gateway of Zion from the South. The most notable feature of the ride might be the detour up the newly paved Kolob Terrace Road. In Mormon scripture, ‘Kolob’ is the heavenly place nearest the residence of God.

Day 2

Springdale – Bryce

Originally a settlement for Mormon farmers, Springdale is our jumping off point into Zion National Park, and has been one of Forbes Traveler’s 20 Prettiest Towns. From Zion into Bryce Canyon, we’ll ride through some of the most famous vistas in the American Southwest.

Day 3

Bryce – Boulder

One of the trip’s major highlights of the trip comes today. The Grand Staircase–Escalante is a renowned national monument known as one of the most beautiful and geologically unique places on the American continent. A fascinating day’s ride with a steep climb to our luxurious hotel, the Boulder Mountain Lodge, where we will stay for two nights.

Day 4

Boulder – Boulder

Today presents a choice of routes: the first takes riders on the long climb up Boulder Mountain, into high desert country with commanding views of deep valleys and green hills. The second keeps to the rocky lowlands along the rugged, rolling Burr Trail Road. Another night staying at the Boulder Mountain Lodge, with its fine cuisine, awaits.

Day 5

Tropic – Brian Head

A quick transfer takes us to Tropic, where we’ll climb and descend before taking in the longest climb of the trip – approximately 1,400m over 50km – to Brian Head. The views and the wildlife of Dixie National Forest, and Panguitch lake, are highlights.

Day 6

Brian Head – St. George

Our trip comes to a crescendo with a ride back to St. George – packed with perfect roads, challenging terrain, interesting history and views that convey the sheer magnitude of things in this region. Rugged landscapes stretch out from these roads in all direction with no hint of civilization as far as the eye can see. You can choose to stay at the Hilton Garden Inn this night, but it is not included in your itinerary

FAQ

Can I rent a bike?

We have a fleet of top-specification hire bikes available for rent on our European departures. They cost £50 per day. We ask that guests requiring a bike tell us as far as is possible in advance, so we can guarantee the right size is available, and also to send us your fit measurements, so our mechanics can set up the bike for you ready for the start of your trip. If you’re renting a bike you need to remember to bring your helmet, pedals and saddle to your trip start.

What kind of assistance can riders expect on the road?

When you’re riding you’ll always have at least one ride guide on the road with the group. Raids are more self-sufficient than a Randonnee, so while a mechanic will be available they won't be tracing the route or offering on-road support during the day. Your guides will be able to help you out with ride food and drink, as well as local knowledge, first aid, a morale-boosting chat and – if necessary – a hand to push you up the hill if you’ve run out of energy.
