Ira Ryan

What’s your name, nickname, age, birthplace, hometown?
Ira Ryan | 33 | Sweet Cheeks | Mt. Pleasant, Iowa | Hometown= Iowa City, Iowa
Favorite phenomenon?
Sunrises.
How do you like to tell stories?
With a bottle of red wine next to a campfire.
Pivotal moments in life?
Watching the sun rise from a bicycle seat. Most bike rides are pivotal.
Why/how did you start riding?
I started riding to get to school 7 miles away when I was 13. When I
saw a magazine with sean Kelly on the cover, it was over.

Family life, or home life; kids, wife, girlfriend, pets?
Best girl in the world who also out shreds me down most singletrack.
Sick! Little house with a shop out back and a fully stocked wine
cellar.
What’s your special talent/gift to the world?
Double butted, lugged alchemy. Ride it!
What’s the continental project mean to you?
Discovering the roads that most people would have never known about
otherwise. Swift, long rides.
Why are you interested in documenting rides?
To share them with the people who ride bikes.
What do you want a riding guidebook to feature (what’s missing from what currently exists out there), and how will you contribute to that end goal?
I think it needs to be simple and elegant with just the right amount
of info. No one wants to have their hand held through a ride. Put down
the fucking gps and get lost in the woods. A sense of adventure leads
to a better story.
What’s style mean to you?
Style is something that everyone has. Some people just put the pieces
together differently. I like ¾’s AND booties in the winter.

Who’s your favorite local rider and why?
Racers: matt hall, tourists: caitlen giddings, messengers: the magpie
messenger crew, commuters: I love 'em ALL .
Where in the world would you like to ride next and why or what group ride if you could do any would you do?
I miss the tues/ thurs group rides in Iowa City. I wish I could have
done some of the rides in the Appilachan mtns. I still think the
Pacific NW is some of the best riding in the country.
Why cycling and not, running or shot put or speed skating?
Cycling is the most efficient vehicle known to man. it can take you
around the world.
Your favorite ride/moment ever, just the details?
Under a full moon on a gravel road at 3am without lights. Not just
the trans iowa race but countless times when I was growing up. Fucking
amazing!
What’s your job all about, why does it fit you?
I build bicycles for a living. The finest, handbuilt, ride tuned bikes
in the world. I love it. Build it, ride it, race it.
What’s your program, like who and what and where is your world?
My program is good espresso, sharp files, not too rushed. Ride a bike
every day and balance your life out. Shop, garden, 3 hours in the
hills is my world.
Where you live and why it suits you?
Trying to live simple in Portland. Ride a bike every day.

“What motivates me? Andrei Tchmil rolling 48-53 tooth chain rings in the spring classics and then bunny hopping the traffic circle. Advancing up a mountain and looking back to see clouds fill the valley below as you climb switchbacks higher and higher. Taking the path less traveled and telling great stories about it. Coffee and lots of it. Grit and panache. Racing the first Trans-Iowa, gliding over the gravel before pulling away to ride solo all night under a full moon to win it. And, don’t laugh—listening to Justin Timberlake and Deee-Lite.”
