A new design to protect racers in the foulest weather

A transformative garment that can be used to adapt all racing kit to be suitable for use in foul conditions, the Pro Team Softshell Base Layer acts as your first, and last, line of defence against the elements.

Constructed from two fabrics – a high-stretch, water-repellent 3-ply membrane for the front and rear panels, with a lighter fabric under the arms – the garment provides a great range of movement and comfort against the skin.

The Pro Team Softshell Base Layer has also been updated with a half-length front zip, allowing for ventilation when the temperature or the pace rise. The tailoring has been improved, too, with refined sleeve and neck size giving a more flexible fit, and a lighter performance fabric used under the arms giving a broader range of movement.

Flatlock stitched seams prevent chafing, and high-visibility details at the cuff and collar catch the eye in low-light conditions. The seams are taped at critical points along the shoulders and sleeves to prevent water penetration.

As with all Rapha Pro Team products, the Softshell Base Layer has race-ready tailoring, with a raised front hem for a better fit while in the drops.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just amazing Nothing matches this for warmth. I have 2 and below 40 down to single digits this is the bomb. This years improvements are great!! Take note as this is nearly a vapor barrier, that is you may not feel dry but the material keeps you warm and wind proof. Here's the deal: There are two states in cold weather riding warm/dry AND warm/wet this is the latter. Please make a sock and I highly suggest the companion arm warmers as part of a complete base layer system. Please make them again this year?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it says on the tin This is to all intents and purposes a softhell you wear under your jersey instead of over it. Its finally been cold enough to wear, and two tough club rides later I'm delighted with it. If you try it on standing up the fit will feel off. Drop into a tuck and everything lines up. Warning, this top has no thermal properties at all. Last weekend I used a mesh base layer underneath it which helped with warmth and with wicking. Another word of warning, once you are in this top you are committed for the rest of the ride. The first time you try to take it off it'll feel like its attacking you and you may need assistance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very hard winter 100K I live in the North of England and am fortunate to have the beautiful Trough of Bowland as my training ground. Unfortunately in the depth of winter the weather can and often is extremely challenging. Last Sunday was probably the most severe weather of the year with sub zero conditions, wind, rain, sleet and snow. My Pro team soft-shell base along with merino arm warmers and a hardshell jacket kept me warm even when the weather did its very worst to end my ride early. I bagged my quick hundred and was ready to go again the next day. Brilliant versatile piece of kit, well done Rapha.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product but at a price Had this bought for me as a birthday present, it does what it says on the tin, keeping you dry and wind out, It works well under a cycle top as described down to about 5 Celsius for me with a thin bottom layer underneath as the feel of the top itself is a little like putting on a plastic bag! Have used it under 5 down to -4 under a cycle jacket with no problems. I have to whip it off as soon as I finish a ride though as it does fell clammy when you stop moving. Like it though and using it on my daily commute each day. Would have got a 5 star rating if not for the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great fabric and performance This is a great base layer for windy and changing conditions. I found the fit to be quite short - I am in between an XS and S but the S was still riding up above my bibs. Otherwise a great product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very impressive...BUT: I've used this on a few rides now on drizzly, wet or windy morning commutes. With arm warmers I have to say I'm really impressed. I've had just a short sleeve over the top and been riding for 40 mins commute in drizzle and not needed waterproof- it keeps you at comfortable working temp and keeps the worst of chill off you. Why not 5 stars? Well as some reviews have mentioned the feel of the material takes some getting used to. So much so I HAVE to wear a mesh base layer underneath, otherwise the feeling is like a cold, wet plastic bag against the skin - which you can imagine is not pleasant! I find the fit fine, once in riding position, and there is definitely a "technique " for getting it off. I would recommend as long as you're prepared to have to wear a very lightweight layer underneath

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Highly technical let down by extremely poor fit I was quite intrigued by the idea of having a softshell baselayer that would add more versatility to a standard skinsuit for CX racing. Like all previous Rapha items I bought the XS size expecting it to be as a good fit as previous Rapha baselayer. While undoubtedly the item is extremely well made and does what is intended, it is rendered useless personally a baffling fit. Particularly in the shoulder/back where there appears to so much excess material I'm left with an effective hunchback behind my neck. I have slim arms so I can excuse a slightly loose fit there but give the baselayer generally fits around the waist and in the chest it is puzzling how this cut was decided on. It appears that the cut has been revised in the latest version.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An essential piece of kit. I've owned other wind barrier base layers and have always loved the ability to wear my team kit and race in the cold without the penalty of a full exterior layer. The Rapha Pro Team takes that concept to a whole other level by providing great arm and neck coverage in addition to chest coverage. The added warmth and water resistance is also a huge bonus. The fit was a little surprising. I expected the piece to be a little longer on the torso and tighter around the shoulders however, I found plenty of room on the shoulders and the length, if anything, to be a hair short. For my height, I have a very short torso and broader shoulders than your typical bike racer and the medium is a good fit.

after a wash do you have to use an apparel re-proofer to regain the DWR status or is it DWR for ever, thanks

Asked by: sea and sand
Hi, this product should have a DWR coating re-applied after several washes, it does need this treatment after every wash. Due to its construction, it will still function well even if the coating is not re-applied.

What is the recommended temp range for this product? Is it suitable for a hot and wet condition like a typical Asian tropical thunderstorm?

Asked by: Sam Lian
Hi, as we all regulate temperature differently it is hard to advise on the temperature range. It is intended to be worn in cold and wet conditions so might not be ideal for a humid tropical thunderstorm.
