Three-season weather protective jersey made of a pioneering fabric

"...consider the fact that Rapha has discovered the Holy Grail in cycle kit - something totally and comprehensively water resistant that doesn’t boil you from the inside out"
Graham Hudson, The Times. Saturday February 20th. 2016.

The Pro Team Shadow Jersey offers a new approach to racing in bad weather. Using a stretch-woven fabric, the form-fitting jersey offers an unprecedented combination of protection against the elements and breathable comfort under duress.

Read the Pro Team Shadow feature »

The fabric used in Rapha’s Pro Team Shadow range is a truly revolutionary solution to an age-old problem: even the most expensive rainwear options are made from a plastic-feeling laminate material and are taped at the seams, resulting in a clammy jacket in which it is easy to overheat – not ideal for racing. The Pro Team Shadow Jersey’s fabric, however, has a DWR (durable water repellent) finish applied twice during the manufacturing process, making it ‘hydrophobic’ – water simply rolls off – and yet it is stretch-woven, meaning that tiny gaps of air allow body heat out, despite it compressing for an aero fit. The inner is brushed too, so the short sleeve jersey can be worn comfortably over a base layer, or even straight onto skin.

The Pro Team Shadow Jersey was developed to provide Team Sky’s cyclists with a jersey to race in that would protect them against the elements on changeable days. In frantic races, they can wear it from start to finish, avoiding trips back to the team car to collect or deposit gilets and rain capes. It is truly an all-in-one solution. Team Sky have been racing in jerseys made of the Pro Team Shadow fabric since the start of the 2015 season to great effect, especially during the Belgian Classics.

The cut of the jersey is streamlined to compact to your body shape in a race fit, and it has ¾ length sleeves for more protection on the arms. The chunky zip pull with grippy zipper is much easier to use than normal zips, perfect for when time and movement is limited during a race while the Pro Team-embossed gripper elastic on the rear hem keeps the jersey in place even during exertion. Three rear cargo pockets allow for storage while drill holes at the bottom of each one let rainwater roll straight out. There are also taped seams on the jersey’s shoulders for rainwater protection where it matters most.

Aesthetically, the Pro Team Shadow Jersey is jet black, and it has Rapha’s Pro Team Convict stripes design printed on the rear-right pocket and on the back of the arms. It looks just like the name would indicate, so that you can remain hidden in the shadows until the time comes to attack the race.

"The jersey is good down to around 6ºC with a regular base layer and should also be wearable on wet days when the mercury is in the upper teens. Summer then.

It showed itself best on a hill rep training session, working very hard on the way up, sweating, and then coasting back down at 50kph in cool air. The combination of breathability and windproofing is excellent."

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Weird fit Sorry guys, love your brand and religiously wear the Pro Team kit but this just don't fit right. I'm not sure if it's the material, style but the arm length is simply uncomfortable. It comes down past the elbow and is too tight. Have had to return. Have no idea what perforance is like as i haven't worn on a ride nor in rain. I'm sure they do the job promised.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Needs improvement The cut and tailoring needs improvement, i found this product to be loose at the back when standing, not fitted as pictured unfortunately. Not a 'Pro Team' cut.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes wet riding (almost) pleasant I bought this along with the bibs as soon as they came out and I am so glad I did. Its cold and often wet at the moment and this is like the best insurance policy. I got caught out only last weekend with only a softshell jacket and no rain jacket. It really poured with rain. this jersey gave me the dryness I needed even once the softshell had soaked through.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High performance from quality product on purchasing , I also ordered two jerseys from others manufacturers who claimed their jerseys had identical properties and similar performance standards . Okay, whilst I couldn't test these two similar products on road, an 'in house' comparison between all three highlighted how the Shadow was of a superior cut, construction and fabric finish. The Shadow material felt softer (the two other felt rigid when worn) and offered more flexibility in movement - less wetsuit more ski jacket type material. I take a large pro team, it fitted like the pro team jacket/jersey in the chest and shoulders. I found the extra arm length comfortable and certainly saw the advantage when out on the road. I've worn it on 3 rides in recent weeks in variable conditions, on two occasions it rained and the jersey performed as stated and exceeded my expectations. Water beaded and ran off without any obvious signs of water penetrating the fabric. Yes, there's the issue of perspiration, but at tempo pace the moisture was no more than the pro team jacket and certainly less that a rain jacket. I didn't find the moisture from sweat to be excessive nor uncomfortable, the insulating qualities were ideal for a day of tempo and climbing in the hills at 8 degrees. Solid performance. Its been washed twice - once in ordinary detergent and once in a detergent I use for my ski gear, it shows no obvoius signs of loss of waterproofing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must for almost any conditions ! Brilliant piece for conditions ranging from windy and chilly to a spin ride in warmer conditions.I wear it with a short sleeve base layer and arm warmers on cooler days and a thin base with arm screens when temperature rises a bit.Would be fantastic if Rapha could make it in a different colour , should also add that it wears like an aero top if you have the right size and all my best time trial times seem to have come while wearing this!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Real weather protection This top is the business!. feel warm and protected in cold and wet conditions. it is less breathable and a little warm than some similar products but it offers superior protection against the elements- I will use from Sept to May- As soon as the temp rises >14C it becomes to hot.

If I'm a large in the other Pro Team kit would it be the same for the shadow jersey as I've read it comes up slightly smaller?

Asked by: Abs923
Hi, please refer to the size guide as far as possible. With the information you have provided, we would suggest you try a Large. For the garment to perform correctly, the correct size needs to be purchased to avoid stretching the fabric. Should you need to exchange, we have a 90 days return period.

Is this Pro Team jersey along with the new line of Pro Team Aero jerseys Treated with Coldblack and do they all provide UV protection as did the jerseys before?

Asked by: Designated
Hi, the shadow fabric does not have Cold-black technology. It will provide a very high-level of UPF protection, but we are unable to give an exact value as it can vary hugely depending if the fabric is stretched, or other factors such as saturation.

Are these (both the bibs and jersey) meant to be unisex or male only?  If the latter, when will the woman's version come out?

Asked by: Thad
Hi, the current range could be considered as unisex but a women's specific version is in development with the Canyon/Sram Women's team.

What are the contrasting qualities of this jersey vs the PT Softshell jacket?

Asked by: Sam Lian
Hi, There are quite a few differences between these two jackets so for a full comparison please refer to the products pages on the website. However a basic difference is the Pro Team Softshell is a thinner 'shell' jacket with an excellent all around water repellent nature. The Pro Team Jacket has more insulation while also offering a windproof and water-repellent treatment on the leading panels, the rear panels are made using Super-Roubaix for insulation and wicking where it matters.
