World-Tour proven waterproof shell

On hard rides or races in changeable conditions riders need a breathable and waterproof outer shell that will protect them from the worst of the weather and won’t cause them to overheat. The Rapha Pro Team Race Cape is that garment.

This season’s updated version is made of a new performance fabric by Polartec that is both highly breathable and offers superior protection from the elements. A small zip pocket on the left side of the jacket, for easy access to an energy bar or gel.

A favourite garment of pro racers such as WIGGINS’ Owain Doull, who says it “almost feels like a normal jersey”, the Race Cape is tailored for a close ‘Pro Team fit’ and has extra features such as zipped cuffs and fully-taped seams. The jacket packs down into a compact bundle and fits in a jersey pocket.

A dropped tail keeps road spray off of the back of your jersey, and the fabric has a slight stretch to allow the jacket to keep its shape over fully-loaded pockets.

The zip has a textured puller for easy use when wearing gloves, and the zipped cuffs make it easy to remove the jacket while on the bike, as well as providing ventilation. The cape also has a bonded strip at the elbows for you to cut around, if you prefer your waterproof short-sleeved.

Reviews:

"Rapha makes some bloody good kit and the Race Cape is a prime example. It looks great even in hard-to-pull-off fluoro yellow ('chartreuse' in Rapha-speak) and fit and comfort is superb. Designed with performance in mind - with input from Team Sky - it's snug, with a shorter front so it keeps its shape when you're on the drops. The zip has a storm flap, the cuffs are zipped, it breathes really well and is highly waterproof." - Cycling Plus, March 2015

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Much improvement over the previous race capes, good choice of colourways and extra features like zipped pocket and sleeves. Would probably give good protection when falling off pulling wheelies

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new best friend Been using this a lot for about three months now. Definitely very waterproof. I've been through some fairly heavy and sustained rain in this and nothing got through. Very light and packable - it's become my best friend on long rides in changeable conditions. Fit is very race specific as described - I wasn't used to this but once on the bike the cut really makes sense. One of the best features are the zips on the ends of the arms. Surprised more rain jackets don't have this - much easier to slip on and off and improves ventilation when you need it. I went for the 'Chartreuse' - definitely distinct from and MUCH nicer than standard hi-vis yellow. Generally looks and feels great to wear. The bands on the arms for cutting off the sleeves option create a nice subtle feature (though how anybody can do that to a jacket this expensive is beyond me!). Inner surface of the jacket has a soft smooth texture so it slips on and off very easily and feels comfortable against bare skin. Breathability isn't great in my opinion - though I think breathability in anything seriously waterproof is a bit of a myth. I find if I wear this when it's not actually raining I feel clammy pretty quickly. So it's rubbish as a wind jacket but that's not what I got it for - I wanted something light I could pull out when the skies darken that would definitely fend off anything the heavens can throw at me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm & dry Much better than my cheaper rain jacket - kept me dry in some very wet weather on the RAB and breathes enough to stop you getting soaked from the inside. Thank you to Jonathan for the great advice!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Waterproof and remarkably breathable too! Kept me dry, warm and happy over 4 days of torrential rain in the Dolomites - At times the storms lasted over 3hours and were at an average temperature of 25C so it was really hard to decide what to take - this jacket became the go to plan - and was incredible. Yes, it's a little heavier to carry in your jersey than a wind jacket or Gillet, but there's not much in it really and when you ned it, it's so much better than either of those two options. An essential item!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Try stopping me now... The first time I wore this, within hours of using it I hated it - It was warm, too warm, I felt the arms ran a tad long and perhaps this was not the product I needed. On my way back I knew I was going to return this... then it started raining (I was wearing it knowing it was going to rain but it had not started yet).... Oh boy - what a mistake, the cape is PERFECT. No longer warm, kept me dry, comfortable and understood the arm length of the cape. So good was this cape that just before I got home, I did a U-turn and rode another 18km in the rain just because... It fits great (did not need to up-size) and it is a key piece for me. I have used it a few times now and now understand that its a terrible wind cape, so I learned to use it as it was deigned. Perfect for me who loves to ride in the rain.

Using base layer, arm warmers and short sleeve jersey is this jacket good for winter?

Asked by: Danielvivi
This jacket is fully waterproof and breathable. However as we all regulate temperature differently it is hard to advice on the temperature range for individuals and differing exertion levels will also affect its properties.

Whats the difference between the wind Jacket and the pro team cape regarding heat retention? I know one is more water proof than the other, but I normally dont ride in the rain. Which would you recommend for chilly morning?

Asked by: aell
The Wind Jacket is a lighter weight Jacket and will retain less heat than the Race Cape. Both are wind and water resistant, with the Race Cape being more waterproof of the two

I've got the pale green version of this jacket which is now disappointingly mud stained after a rainy ride yesterday-any tips for how to get it looking clean again without ruining the material?

Asked by: Tam D
We suggest using our Apparel Wash on this item and then reproofing if it has gotten particularly dirty as the dirty residue trapped in the fibre compromise the waterproofing. Road grime is difficult to remove from lighter coloured items as a constituent part of the mud is also engine oil from vehicles. The stain will be an oil based residue and as the Race Cape is made from an oil-based fibre, separating oil from oil is near on impossible.

Does the race cape have any sort of venting under the arms?

Asked by: Tobba
The technology of this garment is made of a new performance fabric by Polartec that is both highly breathable and offers superior protection from the elements across the whole race cape.

I have the 1st ed. rain Jacket in M; was too long in the arms & flaps a bit. I imagine this will be more breathable. Would a SM be best or is the pro team in M likely to be apt? 180cm, 70kg, slim.

Asked by: Conzaa
The Pro Team Range is a tighter fitting garment and is technically designed to be a race fit and thus has longer arms to accommodate a racing position on te bike. For the Pro Team Range based upon your dimensions a size Medium could be an appropriate fit. We do have a 90 day returns policy should the garment not meet with your specifications.

Hi, I take a S in the brevet, classic ss jersey and long sleeve pro team but take a M in pro team ss jersey, I am 174cm, 70kg ave with 95cm chest. The S in the race cape is good in length & sleeves but tight in chest and M is good in chest - help pls.

Asked by: Mbike
The Pro Team Range will always have a more tighter fit then the more relaxed range of the Brevet garments and as such the Race Caps can feel a more tighter fit. If this is too restrictive you can always go for a size up on the Race Cape. We do have a 90 day returns policy if the garment does not meet you personal specifications.

I currently wear a pro team rain gilet in size medium (gives space for jersey pockets).  I wear a pro team aero jersey in medium for my arm size. I can also fit the small pro team gilet for a snug pro fit.  Would you recommend small for the race cape?

Asked by: Albie
The Race Cape in Medium should be a good fit based upon what you have described.
