High-wicking base layer for hard summer riding

A base layer for riding in warm to hot conditions informed by elite-level racing, with an open mesh body offering exceptional breathability and moisture transfer and stretch side panels to create a perfect, contoured fit.

New for this season is a chartreuse sleeveless version embellished with ‘ALLUMER LA MÈCHE’ or ‘light the fuse’, a French cycling expression referring to an explosive attack. The black sleeveless version reads 'LA TÊTE ET LES JAMBES', the title of a book written by Henri Desgrange, the founding father of the Tour de France, and the white version has ‘UNA SCALATA SUPERBA’ or ‘a superb climber’ on the chest - from the front page Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper after Fausto Coppi’s heroic ascent of the Passo dello Stelvio in the 1953 Giro.

The pink sleeveless version features the slogan: ‘N’ONT-ILS PAS DES AILES?’, the words of Tour founder Henri Desgrange upon seeing three riders conquer the Galibier for the first time in 1911: “Do they have wings, these men who have risen to heights that even eagles wouldn’t dare go?”

NB: The Pro Team Base Layer sizing is race-tight. Please select your regular jersey size or, if you want a more relaxed fit, move up one size.

“Some people don’t see the point of wearing base layers in the summer but I almost always do, feeling more comfortable with one on. It’s up to you, naturally. Rapha’s Pro Team Base Layer really is one of the best I’ve used for hot rides and, believe me, I’ve used a hell of a lot over the years.” Road.cc

“From the moment it arrived, Rapha’s Pro Team Base Layer’s been on heavy rotation. And by heavy rotation I mean every ride. Extremely lightweight with a tailored fit and a highly effective wicking performance, this base layer should be on your radar if you’re looking for the best with a healthy dose of aesthetic seasoning.” Cycleboredom.com

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Revelatory!! Makes such a difference. Every now and again you come across a piece of clothing that makes a genuine difference (positive) to your cycling experience. I'm a confirmed Merino base layer wearer and quite like the sleeveless Rapha version for hot weather use. I didn't really hold out much hope for a synthetic product. But I thought I'd give the Pro Team Base layer a go as some of my club mates had waxed lyrical about similar (rival brand) products. After a week riding up steep French hillsides (temp in the high 20s up to 1,000+ metres) I have to say that I'm really, really impressed with the comfort and fit. Will definitely buy more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cool wicking! I'm moving abroad to India for 3 years & need a couple more base layers. Mindful that my Merino sleeveless may run a little hot in the humidity, I went for a couple of the Pro Team base layers. Mindful also of the 'race fit' sizing, I bought a Large (my regular size) & an XL as well. Disappointingly, the large is looser under the arms vs my Large Merino, however, still comfortable enough to use. The XL was returned. I wore the L in a crit recently & though the cooler weather helped considerably, did not feel I was over-heating (maybe I wasn't riding hard enough!).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Typical Rapha quality I haven't gotten to use this on a really warm/hot day here in San Diego, but I have been using it on colder/damp mornings and it works very well. Keeps the chills away after sweating then descending while it's cool. The color is a little bit louder than the picture. Actually a lot louder :) but it's okay with me. I think the best feature is; I forget that I have it on? Great fit and Typical Rapha quality

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Technically great but... ...the sizing is problematic. I wore this in Mallorca in 28 degree heat with a jersey on top and it kept me cool and controlled sweat to a comfortable level. So it works as it should and it looks good to boot. The size though is a pain. I have a 41 inch chest and 32 inch waist and a back length of 37 inches. Which puts me firmly between a medium and a large which was what I bought first. However that was like a crop top didn't even cover my naval it was also a smidge tight on the chest but bearable. So back it went in favour of the XL which is a) still too short and b) like a skirt round the waist. Thankfully bib shorts spare most of my blushes. C'mon Rapha there are some tall/slim people of the world that like kit to fit and I don't find your sizing particularly accurate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great piece to help with the heat I purchased this vest for a trip to Bourg-d'Osians this August. Whilst counter-intuitive wearing more layers when the mercury is rising, the wicking properties were very welcome in the heat and sun. Worked exceptionally well under a white Rapha Lightweight Jersey on the Col de la Croix de Fer and Alp d'Huez.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pro Team sleeveless base layer I have read good reviews about this product, so I thought I'd try it out. I was skeptical when it arrived because it was identical in weight, identical in feel, identical in the waffle construction, identical in composition (94% polyester, 6% polyurethane) when compared to other name brand base layers I own. The fit is fine; not too long or too short; good sized arm holes; low collar. The construction and styling are good, as are all Rapha products. I have used it several times, making note of the temperature/humidity each time. Alternating with my other brands on back-to-back rides, As suspected, I noticed absolutely no difference in overall performance between this and my other base layers. In summary, it is a good base layer, but not any better than the less expensive competition, therefore not worth the extra $$. Hence the 3 star rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Base Layers: the building blocks of a day out!! I had never really bought into base layers and wicking etc... until I went on a "warm weather" cycling holiday. I'd find myself either incredibly hot and sweaty, or during a break suddenly very cold. Having done a few rides now using these and others in the range. I have to confess to being a convert. The distraction that sweaty tops gives and then the loss of concentration when your shivering as you get back on the bike had all but vanished thanks to the great way these toos regulate the flow of moisture away from the skin is brilliant. I don't go anywhere now without a base layer appropriate for the day ahead on. It's one of my first considerations when getting ready, and leads to a nice distraction free day of cycling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Und tss und tss I wear the sleeveless base layer when riding my bike AND driving my Iroc Z. My fleshy pipes look even twice as killer when wearing this deadly layer. Mostly cuz I got big arms, cuz I drum, right?
