Lightweight merino-blend cycling base layer for year-round riding

Designed for all conditions, including high summer, the Merino Mesh Base Layer offers high performance and exceptional comfort. It is made from a proprietary, merino-blend Rapha fabric which combines the natural qualities of merino with a lightweight mesh structure for additional ventilation and improved moisture management. The Merino Mesh Base Layer has a dropped tail for a great fit on the bike, while flatlock seams and raglan sleeves ensure comfort. Finished with a Rapha logo tab on the chest.

“There is no better base layer than this mesh wool piece which is light enough for the heat of autumn days but, thanks to the merino, adds lots of warmth after the sun sets.”
Outside Magazine

“It’s odd to find an item of clothing that performs well across the seasons, yet that’s just what we have here with the Merino Mesh.”

“I’ve found that with the right windproof jackets it works well on cold winter days, and with thinner long-sleeve jerseys it manages to work into double-figure temperatures as well. I can’t think of another base layer that does this and works across such a wide temperature range.”
Cycling Weekly 9/10

“Amongst my initial thoughts when opening the packet were about the fragility of the mesh, but it seems it holds up to the rigours of Team Sky who use it – so thats good enough for me! In use it’s holding up to daily wear nicely, no loose seams, stretching or tears – I’m pretty rough with my kit in general so I was worried about longevity with it.” 8/10

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it Bought this for a lightweight tour from athens to paris. I have only 1 set of bike clothes and this top is simply brilliant, it's keeping me warm on a morning ,wicking the sweat like nobody's business, doesn't smell and drys really fast after a downpour or a hand wash! (Warning do not wear this garment on its own in an albanian nightclub the locals may take offence )

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Base Layer Essential 101 Ever since the day I tried on this garment, I want to wear this base layer for all occasions. It is comfortable, soft and stretchy that forms nicely around your body. Keeps warm without overheating is the key! I am glad that I purchased the bundle so I always have a clean one to wear just about everyday. I also purchased a Pro Team Soft Shell jacket and in the 43F weather the mesh layer is all I needed as the base layer. It is nice to be able to ride in the cold weather without the need to bundle up like a mummy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comfortable and versatile This is my second Merino Mesh. Works well under a variety of conditions. Have worn most on cold early Spring days under a short sleeved Gabba jersey where the stretchy fit and sleeve length is ideal, but also useful in warmer weather under a merino or sport wool top. Thin enough to combine effectively under another light merino base layer (eg when skiing) to add 'air space' and help keep the skin dry. Overall, is similar to a Brynje mesh base layer - probably more comfortable, but not as robust.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing warmth for such a light garment It's early days and I have only worn this mesh base layer once, too keep warm, not cool. However, under my Rapha Brevet Jersey (a warm jersey in its own right) and arm warmers it felt as though I was wearing my Winter jersey (yes, yes, another Rapha item) but without the bulk. This would be a great item to take on a long ride, such as an overnight Audax, as it adds a layer of warmth, when the sun goes down, for very little space. It may be a few months until I see what it's like in hot weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favourite Didn't think about buying them at all for so many years but bought them now. I wish I bought them sooner. I absolutely love them, I wear them to sleep and I wish I can wear them all the time outside too but it is a bit too revealing. They are extremely comfortable. They are warm so I don't think I will wear them over 20C. I wear them over 15C but with only a mesh jersey.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most versatile piece I wear with any ride I first started using my new mesh base layer in the fall in the morning rides at around the 70's n 80's which worked as a perfect cooler. In the fall, this is a perfect insulator under my any of my Rapha Jerseys. It takes the place of my vest or light onion skin jacket. It regulates my temperature perfectly because I sweat buckets. This base layer soaks up my sweat and pushes out all the moisture out to dry super quickly. Yup a perfect second skin, slip it on with confidence and just go ride!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super base layer I tend to get warm so I find it difficult to wear true winter base layers. This base layer fits the bill for me with its short sleeves and good moisture movement. I worn it under my 851 jacket when the air temp was around 5c and functioned exceptionally well. On sizing base layers need to be close fitting to work properly and I bought a medium. I weigh 78kg and a 98cm chest, long body short legs though! So I sort of fall between the upper medium and lower large range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warmer than the Pro Team I thought I would try the wool mesh base layer instead of my usual synthetic mesh pro team base layer. For warmer weather, I prefer the pro team but I'm surprised at how well the wool breaths. The wool is just a tad warmer than the synthetic. Becuase of this, I think the pro team mesh is a better all-rounder in terms of temperature control. This is especially important in a place like San Francisco where ride temps can range from low 60s to low 90s in the same ride.
