Fine merino for all-day cycling comfort

Any experienced cyclist knows the value of a good base layer. It will keep you cool on scorching hot cols in July and warm on freezing descents in January. A good base layer helps regulate body temperature whatever the weather, transfering moisture from the skin and proving a vital aid to performance.

Rapha base layers are made from 100% merino wool and are naturally anti-bacterial and odour resistant. Wicking moisture vapour extremely quickly, they are soft on the skin and itch free.

Rapha's merino base layers come in three styles; sleeveless, short and long sleeve. All the seams have flatlock stitching so they won't chafe and are positioned behind the shoulders to avoid bag or bib straps rubbing while cycling. The base layers are close fitting and cut long at the back for a better fit on the bike.

"Base layers are incredibly important in winter to help regulate the body's temperature, but they also keep the body dry without it getting too hot. Rapha's base layer does this superbly, something that the mention of wool might normally have you doubting."
- Cycling Weekly

"There's a soft pliability to Rapha's wool that makes it a joy to wear as a layer against the skin. The wicking is outstanding. It's the best base layer I've ever worn [and] was equally pleasurable at both ends of the temperature spectrum."
- Competitive Cyclist

"Despite having so much cool Rapha clothing to choose from, my absolute favourite is the merino wool undervest. I practically live in those things. Whether it's training, sleeping or just chilling out around the house."
- Kristian House, 2009 British National Road Race Champion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great basic allraonder I first buy one of these and after testing it for some month´s I now buy a bundle with three more. If I have to chose one product of all thing´s I buy from Rapha this is the one. It´s a real basic allrounder and I wear it to a lot more activitys than cycling. As I am skinny and want a baselayer to have a bodyclose fit I go for size small. With a bodylenght of 1.90 cm I was worried it be to short but it cover me well all way down and was perfect for me. It has all the advantages of a merino layer and add to that a high quality and a very soft feel aginst the skin. Wash them carefully and you wear them time after time and agian and again :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Base layer perfection! Radha merino base layers are simply amazing. They see use all year round, and not just while cycling. Canadian winters are hard and long, and I find myself wearing those base layers under my suits as often as I do under my riding gear. Some of my merino base layers date back to about 2006, and they are still going strong, and all this while having been washed together with the rest of the laundry - no special care. To echo Kristian House’s comments - as much as I enjoy and use a multiplicity of cool Rapha gear, the merino base layers are without a doubt my favourite items.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Feels great to wear but I would size down Fabric is fantastic (although note that because it is 100% merino wool it needs special washing so you can't just chuck it in with everything else) and very comfortable to wear. I bought it to wear under my cycling kit but even though i'm normally a medium in everything else, I would recommend sizing down if you want to do the same - this is just too baggy to wear under my kit. I'm 178cm and 71kg and whilst i'm relatively lean, I wouldn't normally order a small!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable base layer I regularly wear base layers throughout the year and required some new pieces. After reading other reviews, I decided to purchase the merino short sleeve base layer. All my Rapha jerseys are sized medium. After reading other reviews it was recommended to go a size smaller. As a result, I purchased a small size which fits perfectly. The merino base layer is very soft and comfortable to wear on and off the bike. The base layer has performed well, keeping me comfortable during late winter and early spring in Australia. It will be interesting to see how the base layer performs in summer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm, high wicking base layer The Merino base layer is a go-to article for cooler rides. Pair the base layer with a long sleeve training jersey and you're comfortable in temps as low as 4degrees C. Pair it with a pro team soft shell jacket, winter tights and a training jersey and you'll be comfortable in pretty much any condition. The wicking ability is fantastic, I only wish the size was a little smaller. I normally wear a medium in all Rapha products, but found this was slightly larger than I'd hope for a base layer. Consider sizing down one size when you order. Otherwise, a great addition to your wardrobe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Silky smooth merino So far I've only worn this on 2 rides, but it's so nice to wear I don't think it will only be used when I'm on my bike. A well-made base layer, made with merino that is softer and smoother than any others I have had previously. As I've only had it for a couple of weeks I can't comment on its durability or its resistance to odour, but hopefully I'll be wearing it for some time to come. It might be one of the more expensive merino base layers, but with money off from a couple of special offers, it was very nearly a bargain. And you don't read that in Rapha reviews very often!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smart, versatile and comfortable I have four of these layering tops now, three crew neck and one v-neck, and I love them. They are super comfortable and breathe really well. I know they are intended for layering, but I actually wear them around town on the weekends because they are so comfortable. I live in Orlando, Florida and they breathe really well in the heat and humidity, but keep you warm when the weather cools down. Another amazing piece from Rapha that has become a staple in my cycling/city wardrobe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stylish and luxurious base layer/t-shirt Having owned the v-neck merino base layer for a good 18 months now (still going strong) I treated myself to a couple of the round neck versions. Superbly soft merino which is light enough to wear all year round, either as a base layer, or as a t-shirt in its own right (these are too beautiful to be hidden underneath a jersey in my opinion). I'm sure these will last for many a year (always wash my merino gear by hand) and are well worth the investment.

Hello, I would like to find out what the merino weight difference is between the regular short sleeve and the V neck as both are described as having 150gr fabric weight. Also, could you please tell me the micron thickness of the merino used.  Thank you

Asked by: Noamarkou
Hi, the merino weight for each will depend on the size but both use 17.5 micron merino.

Do I need to buy my usual size or should I buy one size down? A lot of reviews seem to suggest it runs large for size

Asked by: Skywalker
Hi, due to the stretchy nature of the merino it can be recommend to size down for the Merino Base Layer.
