Fine merino for all-day cycling comfort

Any experienced cyclist knows the value of a good base layer. It will keep you cool on scorching hot cols in July and warm on freezing descents in January. A good base layer helps regulate body temperature whatever the weather, transfering moisture from the skin and proving a vital aid to performance.

Rapha base layers are made from 100% merino wool and are naturally anti-bacterial and odour resistant. Wicking moisture vapour extremely quickly, they are soft on the skin and itch free.

Rapha's merino base layers come in three styles; sleeveless, short and long sleeve. All the seams have flatlock stitching so they won't chafe and are positioned behind the shoulders to avoid bag or bib straps rubbing while cycling. The base layers are close fitting and cut long at the back for a better fit on the bike.

"Base layers are incredibly important in winter to help regulate the body's temperature, but they also keep the body dry without it getting too hot. Rapha's base layer does this superbly, something that the mention of wool might normally have you doubting."
- Cycling Weekly

"There's a soft pliability to Rapha's wool that makes it a joy to wear as a layer against the skin. The wicking is outstanding. It's the best base layer I've ever worn [and] was equally pleasurable at both ends of the temperature spectrum."
- Competitive Cyclist

"Despite having so much cool Rapha clothing to choose from, my absolute favourite is the merino wool undervest. I practically live in those things. Whether it's training, sleeping or just chilling out around the house."
- Kristian House, 2009 British National Road Race Champion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Merino base layer This is with out a doubt the best base layer shirt I have ever owned. It beat a synthetics and is so thin and comfortable yet holds heat in winter and keeps you cool during spring rides. Best investment in biking clothes bar none!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for spring under a long sleeved jersey Got this to wear under a long sleeved jersey in cool weather as my arms got chilly with a short sleeved base layer; sorted the problem out perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Insanely great. For the setting. I bike 8k-10k km/year in the Netherlands. So flat but windy. I ride almost every day, rain, snow, sun, wind, dark, light. I have 3 of these and use them for the morning ride, afternoon ride, two to three days in a row. Just let them air overnight. They never smell. They have an amazing temperature control quality. Even in -8C I just use this base layer and Rapha Pro Team Jacket. So yes, I love them and recommend them to anyone riding in cold conditions (-15C - +10C ).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile base layer I've used an number of polyester, wickable base layers, but this long-sleeve Rapha Merino top is by far the most comfortable I've tried. it puts a layer of soft wickable and breathable material between you and your Lycra/polyester or whatever jersey, and particularly on chilly mornings, it offers just enough warmth to eliminate having to wear a vest or windbreaker for those first few miles (then have to pack the thing the rest of the day). Only time I might not wear this is in a perticularly hot day. Otherwise, even when the weather gets warm, it remains breathable and comfortable. A really great go-to base layer, particularly for those long days that start chilly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Looked at a Rapha base layer for a while now. Saw they were reduced and treated myself to one. Quality as usual from Rapha. The material is top notch. Expensive but very good

Which of the blues best matches the classic navy jersey are are they the matching, colour coordinated 'warm warmers' (or what I thought were) shown in marketing material?

Asked by: A Hyndman
Hi, for the Classic Jersey II the best match will be the Navy. The Merino Arm Warmers are currently not available in Navy.

Hi, would you be able to provide a weight for a size large? Do they fold down relatively small?

Asked by: BobbyDazzler
I am afraid we do not have the exact weight for this in a large but yes, it can fold down to a small size that will fit in a jersey back pocket when folded down neatly.

Good morning I'm about to order a long sleeve merino base layer but have seen a couple of comments regarding the sleeves being "extra" long. Are they longer than normal? Thanks

Asked by: Raffagent
Hi, the sleeves are not longer but do have more stretch than our jackets or jerseys. Some people do size down to find their best fit in this base layer.

How do you feel this compares to the Merino Crew Neck Knit shirt?

Asked by: Gregory B
Hi, this feels quite different to the Merino Crew Neck Knit. This is made entirely from a very fine merino and is high stretch, and lightweight. The Crew Neck Knit is a merino blend (using the same fine merino), and has a much more substantial feel because of its intended use.

I'm a tough fit and wondering what my best bet is for sizing.  I'm short but have a big chest.  My arm length is 61-62cm (borderline small / medium) my spine length is 52cm = xs, but my chest is 107 cm which is in the large/xl region.  Go medium?

Asked by: Todd KT1
Hi, the most important measurement is for your chest, as you want to be able to breathe comfortably. The Merino Base Layers do have a high degree of stretch so you may be able to fit a medium, but we would suggest the best size for you is a large.

Is this base layer useful for that pre-winter period? If not, what would work on a short sleeve jersey on days when it's like 10-15°C (~50F)?

Asked by: Anonymous
Hi, this base layer could be used in these temperatures but we would recommend a pair of arm warmers combined with a short sleeve base layer and jersey. You can then remove the arm warmers as the temperature rises or if you become too warm.

What do you mean by "Do not leave wet"

Asked by: cpoletis
Hi, the base layer should not be left wet in a cupboard or drawer after riding or washing as this can lead to premature deterioration of the fine grade merino wool. The garment should be allowed to dry thoroughly before storing.
