Fine merino for all-day cycling comfort

Any experienced cyclist knows the value of a good base layer. It will keep you cool on scorching hot cols in July and warm on freezing descents in January. A good base layer helps regulate body temperature whatever the weather, transfering moisture from the skin and proving a vital aid to performance.

Rapha base layers are made from 100% merino wool and are naturally anti-bacterial and odour resistant. Wicking moisture vapour extremely quickly, they are soft on the skin and itch free.

Rapha's merino base layers come in three styles; sleeveless, short and long sleeve. All the seams have flatlock stitching so they won't chafe and are positioned behind the shoulders to avoid bag or bib straps rubbing while cycling. The base layers are close fitting and cut long at the back for a better fit on the bike.

"Base layers are incredibly important in winter to help regulate the body's temperature, but they also keep the body dry without it getting too hot. Rapha's base layer does this superbly, something that the mention of wool might normally have you doubting."
- Cycling Weekly

"There's a soft pliability to Rapha's wool that makes it a joy to wear as a layer against the skin. The wicking is outstanding. It's the best base layer I've ever worn [and] was equally pleasurable at both ends of the temperature spectrum."
- Competitive Cyclist

"Despite having so much cool Rapha clothing to choose from, my absolute favourite is the merino wool undervest. I practically live in those things. Whether it's training, sleeping or just chilling out around the house."
- Kristian House, 2009 British National Road Race Champion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These are to Live In! I recently added a coupe more Merino base layers to my growing collection. I can just live in these - off and on the bike. Probably the only time I am not wearing one is when the weather is extremely hot - The fit in these is brilliant and they become like a second skin on. The new short sleeve v-neck is fantastic and can be comfortably worn under a business type shirt as well. Great for sleeping in too! I will continue to add to my collection so that there is always a fresh one to slip into - and I have covered all the colours in the collection. This is definitely one thing all Rapha fans should have - if you don't already. Enjoy the good life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from mission accomplished This is an outstanding garment that is useful for much more than cycling. In the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. we have been experiencing sub-freezing temperatures recently and I have used this base layer during my workday which has had lows of 12 degrees Fahrenheit. I have worn it up to four days consecutively without any issues or any odor. On the bike, this base layer removes moisture from the skin effectively and is a cut a bit longer in the back so it is very comfortable over several hours on the saddle. Whether I am at work or on my bike, I am warm, dry, and odor free. This is a great product from a great company.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Bought this item to wear casually and for biking on colder days. I went for the black and white striped version because it looks more interesting. Merino feels nice and soft. Sleeves are long and cover my wrists which is great for me because I have arms like Mr Tickle. I'm 180cm/70kg and opted for a medium which fits perfectly - slim but not skin tight. I've washed it and no change to the material. But I don't think the 15minute 30degree wool wash did much - it still smelt a little funky. Perhaps I need to experiment with my washing machine settings. Very happy with my purchase and would buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Soooo comfortable I bought one earlier this Autumn, loved it and went back for 3 more. They have extra long sleeves which cover the wrists, yet the sleeves push up or turn back if you don't want/need that. I have worn them on the bike under another top, but usually wear them as a comfortable, warm yet really light underlayer with my everyday clothes. And being merino, they help me stay fresh and do not smell! The stripe is subtle and I really like it. The web picture does not do it justice. The style is good, I just didn't particularly like the label at the front of the neck, hence only 4 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unmatched performance The base layer performs remarkably. I have used this base layer for pretty much everything - from cycling, through skiing, motorcycle riding etc etc. It always performs well, which is keeps me warm and breathes well. This base layer performs well in cooler conditions by itself and you pair with another layer in colder conditions. I got the black one a few years ago and it has gone through multiple washes and it still retains its shape and there is no fraying or loss of fabric. Great product..I wouldn't expect anything else from Rapha.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile Great product on and off bike, well if I can get to the drawer before my wife! Warm and comfortable and washes well and dries quickly. Doesn't feel itchy like wool. They are generous sizing too if you like a tight fit go down a size from your jersey. I am 40" and medium is still generous. Nice bright colours would be a great option,I like the idea of a pop of Rapha colour when I undo my zip. Rapha could save money on every one by reducing the sleeve length, these are without doubt 2" over manufactured for even Siebergs arms!

Good morning I'm about to order a long sleeve merino base layer but have seen a couple of comments regarding the sleeves being "extra" long. Are they longer than normal? Thanks

Asked by: Raffagent
Hi, the sleeves are not longer but do have more stretch than our jackets or jerseys. Some people do size down to find their best fit in this base layer.

How do you feel this compares to the Merino Crew Neck Knit shirt?

Asked by: Gregory B
Hi, this feels quite different to the Merino Crew Neck Knit. This is made entirely from a very fine merino and is high stretch, and lightweight. The Crew Neck Knit is a merino blend (using the same fine merino), and has a much more substantial feel because of its intended use.

I'm a tough fit and wondering what my best bet is for sizing.  I'm short but have a big chest.  My arm length is 61-62cm (borderline small / medium) my spine length is 52cm = xs, but my chest is 107 cm which is in the large/xl region.  Go medium?

Asked by: Todd KT1
Hi, the most important measurement is for your chest, as you want to be able to breathe comfortably. The Merino Base Layers do have a high degree of stretch so you may be able to fit a medium, but we would suggest the best size for you is a large.

Is this base layer useful for that pre-winter period? If not, what would work on a short sleeve jersey on days when it's like 10-15°C (~50F)?

Asked by: Anonymous
Hi, this base layer could be used in these temperatures but we would recommend a pair of arm warmers combined with a short sleeve base layer and jersey. You can then remove the arm warmers as the temperature rises or if you become too warm.

What do you mean by "Do not leave wet"

Asked by: Chris Poletis
Hi, the base layer should not be left wet in a cupboard or drawer after riding or washing as this can lead to premature deterioration of the fine grade merino wool. The garment should be allowed to dry thoroughly before storing.

Whats the recommended when washing the merino wool? Does it behave like normal wool, in that the material will shrink if washed in hot?

Asked by: Ldogyt
Merino wool needs to be washed at or below 30 degrees and we recommend using our specific merino wool wash. The wool will shrink when washed at high temperatures
