Rugged waterproof and windproof jacket for winter cycling

The Rapha Hardshell Jacket has been designed for total protection in the harshest conditions. It is waterproof and windproof and is made from a new fabric developed in Japan exclusively for Rapha. The fabric has a breathable, laminate membrane, so it will perform on high-intensity training rides and slower-paced spins.

The Rapha Hardshell is a more stripped-back jacket than the Classic Softshell with emphasis on absolute protection against the elements. With a utilitarian design and cutting-edge fabric the Hardshell is the ultimate winter workhorse.

For wet, windy and cold conditions when a robust outer layer is crucial.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile I bought this mainly for use on my mountain bike. So far I have been very pleased. Rode in steady rain today with temperature of 6-7 celsius. Jacket kept me dry and the burnt orange colour visible in the greyish conditions. I had a long sleeve merino base layer and along the flat the temperature was perfect. Ascending I got a little too hot but it not overly clammy. I normally wear XS in classic jerseys and S in pro team range. The XS was a good fit and with the more upright sitting stance on the MTB the jacket was roomy enough without being baggy or tight. I could have worn a long sleeve sports wool jersey underneath and still be comfortable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent fall-winter outer layer Bought the Hardshell Jacket a year ago, so have been using it for almost a full season now. It really delivers on the promise: a jersey or base layer underneath is enough to adapt to every weather from fall to winter. Combine it with a short sleeve jersey or merino base layer for water- and chillproofing, wear a long sleeve merino base layer (I have the roll neck Winter Base Layer) for mountain biking or commuting in -10℃ (winters are cold in Central Europe). Excellent breathability, the special Japanese fabric really delivers. And all this despite being suspiciously thin. Only complaint is for style: lower arms a bit baggy, couldn't see the reason why.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent in every way If i could pick only one item of Rapha clothing i own ,and i own a lot ,this hardshell would be my choice . It exemplifies all that Rapha is about ,its supremely stylish ,very well made ,beautifully cut and best of all does exactly what its made for ....it keeps you dry and warm in the heaviest of rain and low temps. I have done a fair ammount of hill walking and took part in many fieldsports over the years and worn all types of waterproof outer garments and this is right up their in the very top tier . IT IS SIMPLY EXCELLENT.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Waterproof and warm So far very waterproof. Warm enough with just a jersey or base layer down to about 5 deg C. Totally windproof and quite breathable. Better than softshell. If you want a jacket that keeps the wild weather out then this is it. If you want something just for the odd shower then this a bit heavy and there are probably more breathable things out there. Fit is excellent in the body and neck. Arms are a bit baggy for some reason. Hard to say it is great value for the price but compared with Goretex for example it is just as waterproof and breathable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great jacket, XL too big I'm 6"2 and about 75 kg. I have a rather long back and arms which makes the sizing rather difficult. I went for XL in the Hardshell and it fits really well on the arms and chest / neck but the bottom was quite bulky and had a cape feel to it. I've returned for the L size which i'm thinking will be perfect. The jacket itself is next to perfect - aerodynamic, very warm, windproof, waterproof- the best cycling jacket you will own. With just a merino base-layer it will keep you comfortable in the coldest temperatures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This jacket is actually perfect! I bought this jacket thinking it would be like so many others with lofty price tags and not quite deliver! I couldn't have been more wrong, this jacket is literally perfect, I have already ridden in temps down to minus 2 and only had a winter baselayer on and was perfectly warm. And in the rain it's even better, keeps you completely dry. If you can afford this jacket just buy it, there's nothing better out there and it looks fantastic on too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Winter Jacket! Simply put... I love this jacket because it has kept me completely dry and cozy from this harsh cold winter! The jacket is not exactly race fit, so you can easily stuff your primary jersey pockets with all your must need essentials without felling that tight constraint around your upper body once the jacket is zipped up. The rear pockets of this jacket are deep and spacious... perfect for those 26oz bottles. The brilliant asymmetrical zipper helps prevent getting chin checked when you get into the aero mode.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best jacket i've ever owned! Decided to buy this back in the summer to be ready for another Scottish winter. I've used many different riding jackets and nothing has ever performed as well at this piece of kit. Fit is excellent and allows for a couple of layers underneath, the neck is a little loose, perhaps intentional as this allows for a buff/scarf. 100% waterproof in 2hr+ rain and wind, warm enough in -2. Doesn't hold water at all, just beads off and seems to breath really well. Super impressed and a worthwhile investment!

Hi, what kind of temperature in Celsius are we talking about for the Hardshell? I want to wear during Melbourne morning and evening commutes which are around 3-12 degrees. Would this be too heavy duty?

Asked by: beau
Hi, we cannot advise on the temperature range of the Hardshell as we all regulate temperature differently and exertion levels also need to be considered. The Hardshell Jacket has been designed to wear all-day for absolute protection against the elements. It is completely waterproof and windproof and is the ultimate workhorse jacket, no matter how severe the riding conditions.

Is this a jacket similar to the soft shell jacket that it can be equally worn when not cycling? I understand it is made for harsh elements, but I have found most of my Rapha items to be equally as wearable on a night out, as during a ride. Thank you.

Asked by: Frodo
Hi, The Hardshell jacket is the same cut as the Classic Softshell and as such you may of course wear this causally if you wish.

Is it necessary to re-proof the Rapha Hardshell jacket?

Asked by: AndyO
Hi. We advise washing the Hardshell jacket with our Apparel Wash and then using the Rapha Apparel Re-proofer in order to maintain the jackets waterproof qualities.
