Cycling overshoes for very cold and wet conditions

The Rapha Deep Winter Overshoes have been specially created for very cold and wet riding conditions. The shoes are made from an extremely durable, three-ply fabric comprised of a woven face fabric, a waterproof breathable membrane and a fleece backing for warmth.

Unlike most overshoes which have an approximate ‘cut-out’ foot shape, the Deep Winter Overshoes have been designed with a ‘forward’ shape, similar to a ski boot, and which allows maximum range of movement. The sole of the overshoe is made from a durable stretch, kevlar-blend and the central seam is finished with a durable tape to prevent wear.

In addition to taped seams, the overshoes feature an AquaGuard® zip, which ensures excellent water resistance. The zip has a velcro closure and zipguard liner to prevent the zipper digging into the ankle. White reflective piping and a reflective Rapha logo ensure visibility.

Key features:

  • Three-ply fabric
  • Breathable membrane
  • Kevlar-blend sole
  • AquaGuard® zip
  • Compatible with all road cleat systems
Please note: Rapha Overshoes have been specifically designed to be worn with road shoe cleat systems. Wearing them with MTB shoes, including the Rapha Cross Shoes, is likely to damage the Overshoes beyond repair.

Sizing Guide

Sizes range between Small to Extra Large. Above is a guide for UK, US, EU and Japanese measurements.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Typical Rapha style and quality . On to my second pair now , the first had a right kicking last winter and were used in some truly awful North East Weather . They kept my feet warm and dry except in the very worst weather which to be fair nothing would have stopped . There well made , look great and fit well around your shoes . Mind there very tight and you need to be careful with the zip when zipping up . Overall another great Rapha product .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Keep your feet warm but get the size right Only ridden in cold weather but do a good job of keeping my feet war. Cant comment on ability to keep water out but do seem loose at the ankle when closed. Biggest issue though is sizing! I'm a UK8 so could have gone for a medium or large. Went for large which I think is probably the best option but they are still tight on the shoes and not easy to put on. Glad Ive not got bigger feet as they would be even tighter on the shoes. So summary is tight on shoes but slightly loose above - strange

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No rain protection I was so disappointed with these boots. Rapha claim rain protection but within 3 kms of starting a ride in the rain my feet were getting damp. In 5 kms they were soaked through and then started to get really chilly as once wet there was no wind protection either. I have a number of Rapha products that I love and do their job perfectly but these are not fit for purpose. I will still continue to buy other Rapha products such as jerseys and wind jackets which I've found to be excellent. can not recommend these to anyone though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great My first Rapha Overshoe, I've been using my Descente Overshoe for years. Used it this past Sunday low 20's Temp in NJ .. keep my feet warm on par with my Descente shoe Cover. really surprise because the material is a little thinner than the descente, the edge of the cutaway at the bottom where the pedal goes has a piling already caught it from the cleats. maybe a reinforcement will help as well as the toe part too would be nice, reason I love the Descente. best feature I like is the rear zipper. Over all I love it ..

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Robust Overshoes Suffer with cold feet in the winter so bought a pair of these. Combined with a winter boot and wool sock they do the job. Not super toasty but OK after a wet 4 hours in 2 degC. One problem is that the size comes up small. In order to fit over a winter road boot it was necessary to go up a size - so 44 shoe = XL. The problem with this is that the overshoe is still tight and difficult to put on (OK once it's on and the process makes sure you've stretched before you ride...) but is then baggy around the lower leg. In short - material good, warmth/weather resistance good, fit poor. As this is a 'deep winter' overshoe I think it's reasonable to expect it to fit over winter road boots and this could be greatly improved.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Well Made Oveshoes but Not as Warm as Expected The overshoes are made of a thick soft-shell fabric with taped seams, a rear waterproof zip and a reinforced base. They appear very well constructed and should last a long time. However, in use I've had cold feet wearing these in the above-freezing temperatures. In particular, when riding on wet roads I've found the toe area of the overshoes becomes saturated (plus shoes/socks underneath) and the subsequent windchill effect I've experienced has led to uncomfortably cold feet. For me, I feel that the use of soft-shell fabric is a flawed design for riding in wet and cold conditions. However, for riding in dry cool conditions the overshoes will work well since they are well insulated and fully windproof. Sizing is true to the size-guide, the fit is snug, aerodynamic but not uncomfortable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Winter Booties You can tell they are well made and they have a super secure fit around the shoe. They fit tight and take a little extra time to get on compared to other booties I have. But for a thick bootie they do not bulge out like some other brands. They fit well around your shoe. My only gripe is the protection on very cold rides. I rode these in 22 degrees Fahrenheit and my feet started to get cold after about an hour. I would say these are great for any weather between 30-50 degrees (F). The zipper works great and goes up high on the back of my legs so no snow or water will get it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for an hour Got these after Christmas. Really like them and have used them multiple times in the wet and cold of central northern Germany. I would recommend them as they look great but they don't offer a panacea. They're good for about an hour in the wet before 'seepage' starts from the top. Never having owned another pair of booties I can only imagine this is a recurring issue for all types... Also they are not that robust. I scuffed mine on a wall - and was surprised to find a hole in them subsequently. I fear that if you took a tumble they'd be shredded! They do look great though!

if I cycle at the same rate/tempo will these overshoes be warmer than the normal ones

Asked by: Eoghan
Hi, as we all regulate temperature differently it is hard to advise the exact nature of how these will perform under different exertion levels coupled with exterior factors of temperature and windchill . The Deep Winter Overshoes have been specially created for very cold and wet riding conditions.

I already have the rapha overshoes (not the deep winter overshoes) but consider buying the "deep winter" overshoes Are these considerably warmer? I live in Norway and cycling in the winter is often very cold and the warmer overshoes, the better.

Asked by: boka
Hi, while it is hard to advise if these are warmer than normal overshoes as we all regulate temperature differently and it also depends on your level of exertion they are intended to be used in the coldest of conditions and provide a high level of warmth.

Hi, the XL should be fine for size 14 US, but this of course is dependent on the styling of the shoe. We offer a free 90 day return period should it not fit.
